Mechanic

Summary

Performs routine mechanical work on U.S. Navy shore facilities, waterborne vessels, surface ships and/or submarines. Tasks will be related to inspections, repairs, modernization and/or alterations.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Proficient in the use of precision measurement equipment including scales, vernier calipers, micrometers and torque wrenches.
• Experienced with use of torque wrench extensions and multipliers.
• Proficient in the use of portable drill presses.
• Disconnects and connects mechanical joints.
• Removes and installs various equipment using sound engineering practices.
• Overhauls various pumps and valves.
• Able to trouble shoot and determine faulty equipment, determine cause of malfunction and determine best repair method.
• Hydrostatically tests pumps, valves and piping.
• Has the ability to read and follow technical manuals for various equipment.
• Fills out objective quality evidence (OQE) forms.
• May lead a small team of mechanics.
• Performs duties as Firewatch.
• Assists with cleaning up work area.

• Languages Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

• Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data bases.
• Education/Experience: Must have completed a formal related course of study in trade through either a community college, technical or trade school, military training, formal company training program or an apprentice program. Must have 1+ years of verifiable experience as a mechanic in an industrial environment (i.e., shipbuilding, ship repair or nuclear power plants).

Certificates and Licenses

Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed.

• Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals.
• Must possess working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements and understand material safety data sheets (MSDS).
• Able to follow safety procedures.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required on a regular basis to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and/or hear. Frequently the employee is required to carry objects that might weigh up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts or working in a confined space. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Wage Range

$22.00-$42.00 In determining compensation, various factors will be considered, including but not limited to, educational background; relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, market factors; and geographic location.
