About the role

The Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of college-owned vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. In partnership with the Lead Mechanic, this position maintains a diverse fleet that includes grounds maintenance equipment, buses, utility vehicles, and campus vehicles. The Mechanic performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs while supporting the daily transportation and grounds needs of the college community.

Responsibilities

  • General Maintenance and Operational Support (65%)
    • Perform preventive and general maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, setup, and repairs on all college-owned and operated vehicles and grounds equipment.
    • Perform maintenance and repairs on small engines and specialty equipment consistent with the expectations of the lead mechanic.
    • Perform maintenance and repair services that support the college's operational needs while maximizing the safety, reliability, and cost-effective operation of campus vehicles and equipment.
    • Test vehicles and equipment following repairs to ensure safe and proper operation.
    • Conduct seasonal maintenance and prepare equipment for varying weather conditions.
    • Respond to vehicle and equipment breakdowns and provide emergency repair services as needed. This may occur outside of normal working hours.
    • Provide transportation of passengers via bus, van, or car to assigned destinations when no other qualified driver is available.
  • Safety and Compliance (30%)
    • Perform safety inspections to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe for operation.
    • Follow OSHA standards, environmental regulations, and institutional safety procedures.
    • Instruct college employees and students on the safe and proper use of college-owned vehicles and equipment, and document improper use after appropriate instruction has been provided.
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

Requirements

  • Associate degree in automotive or diesel mechanics or completion of equivalent apprenticeship course; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing automotive, diesel, small engine, or grounds maintenance equipment preferred.
  • Valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction, or the ability to obtain this license within six months of hire. Training will be provided.
  • DOT inspection certification for annual bus inspections or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Skills and knowledge of oxy-acetylene, ARC and MIG welding procedures and related equipment use preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal transportation regulations.
  • Effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with members of the college community.
  • Ability to carry out job functions in a safe manner, which may require receiving additional training and using personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain a DOT physical.
  • This position is subject to DOT random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment and instruct others in their proper use.
  • Ability to tolerate and work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift or move items up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, walk, and drive.
  • Ability to work with and or around hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.

Travel Requirements

Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
