Mechanic

About the role

Under close supervision, inspects, repairs, and maintains functional parts of automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps, trucks, and tractors and any other equipment used in city maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Inspect defective equipment and diagnose malfunctions using motor analyzers, pressure gauges, chassis charts, and factory manuals.
• Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends using hand tools and hoists.
• Adjust brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
• Operate equipment to test its functioning.
• Change oil, check batteries, repair tires and tubes, and lubricate equipment and machinery.
• Inform Head Mechanic about tool needs, tool condition, and projected inventory replacement needs.
• Provide on-call duty coverage during non-working hours as per duty roster.
• Plan, carry out, and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally or through outside vendors.
• Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
• Test, service, and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.
• Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts during repair and maintenance work.
• Repair brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, and axle assemblies and related systems.
• Change and repair tires and tubes.
• Evaluate the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles and perform or schedule needed repairs.
• Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed.
• Operate and use a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies including motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools for vehicle and mechanical system work, electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile or portable radio, electric grinders, hand reamer, power wrenches, screwdrivers, soldering iron, torque wrench, tweezers, air compressor, arc-welding machine, spot-welding machine, fixtures, gauges, jigs, manuals, measuring instruments, templates, computer analyzer, scopes, milling machine, motor lift, etc.
• Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by specialized training in mechanics, fleet maintenance, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license or be able to obtain one.

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience Requirements: Requires high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by specialized training in mechanics, fleet maintenance, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
