About the Role

Performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City. Also performs the essential duties and responsibilities of the General Maintenance, Grade 4 classification as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair on City vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain cost containment and purchasing procedures.
  • Carry out assigned projects to completion.
  • Read and interpret construction plans.
  • Operate tools and equipment, including computer systems.
  • Ensure safety in all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Valid State Driver’s license and CDL certification.
  • State of Michigan certification as a master mechanic or other combination of State of Michigan mechanic certifications.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics.
  • Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in municipal maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to maintain cost containment and purchasing procedures.
  • Ability to work safely and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in operating tools, equipment, and computer systems.

Pay

$27.31 - $33.20 per hour depending on qualifications.
