About the role

The Mechanic diagnoses and repairs diesel tractors, trailers, and other wheeled vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Examines and diagnoses vehicle problems, and repairs according to generally accepted methods
• Discusses extensive or difficult in-depth repairs with Terminal Manager and/or Supervisor
• Demonstrates and enforces CEMEX safety policies and regulations (e.g., lockout tagout policies, hazard assessment)
• Ensures shop and all repairs comply with OSHA regulations
• Performs routine scheduled maintenance outlined on PM checklist sheets
• Plans all routine work procedures
• Raises vehicle with hydraulic jack or hoist to access mechanical components for removal, repair, or inspection
• Removes components for repair or replacement, including alternators, starters, water pumps, radiators, condensers, compressors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, wheel assemblies, brakes, drivelines, gearboxes, pumps, rollers, etc.
• Disassembles components, inspects parts for wear, and determines cause of failure
• Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems and components
• Inspects and replaces parts such as clutches, wheel seals, brake linings, drums, bearings, and other components
• Overhauls and rebuilds serviceable components
• Performs regional traveling as required to repair company equipment
• Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and circuitry in accordance with industry standards
• Performs occasional cutting and welding using both gas and electric welding equipment
• Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wiper blades
• Enters work orders into the system for equipment inventory purposes
• Adheres to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times
• Wears proper safety equipment while on plant grounds
• Meets or exceeds company safety standards
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned by management

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 3 years of related experience, training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Able to understand, interpret, communicate, and execute instructions given in both verbal and written form
• Bi-lingual (Spanish) a plus
• Able to recognize potentially hazardous situations, follow supervisor instructions, and apply common sense
• Ability to deal with mechanical problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License; prefer Class A or Class B CDL or ability to obtain within 180 days (new employee evaluation period) with a driving record that meets company requirements to retrieve or test drive company commercial vehicles
• Forklift certified or willing to obtain
• TWIC preferred or willing to obtain

Working Conditions

• Job involves sitting most of the time but also requires walking or standing for brief periods
• Physical requirements include walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree
• Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects
• Regularly required to talk and hear to communicate with employees/visitors
