Mechanic

Full-time position located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, supporting the Tobaccoville and Whitaker Park facilities as well as other Armstrong Service projects.

About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic provides daily general maintenance, supporting the needs of their O&M customer site and other Armstrong Service projects to ensure high levels of customer service and client satisfaction. They apply mechanical knowledge of various utility systems (steam, compressed air, water treatment, HVAC, etc.) to perform all regular and non-routine plant maintenance, including utility operations and clerical work. The role requires the ability to work unsupervised and/or alone, applying skill and judgment to make quick, accurate decisions within prescribed standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform in a self-directed manner, foreseeing the need for work and ensuring it is completed safely and correctly.
• Maintain superior communication with Armstrong and customer personnel, anticipating customer needs.
• Perform daily, weekly, monthly, annual, and other required area, tool, and equipment checks, tests, and inspections.
• Perform lockout/tagout procedures and work within lockout/tagout and confined space requirements.
• Monitor gauges, control systems, and other indicators to ensure utility equipment is functioning properly.
• Collect and record data (photos, run hours, operating cycles) to prepare and maintain logs, reports, and documentation.
• Adjust controls, start/stop pumps, adjust valves, and operate electric switches and valve controls in cooperation with Operations.
• Enter work requests and manage work orders.
• Perform routine maintenance and inspections on equipment (cleaning, painting, lubrication, oil changes, belt/filter changes, pump rebuilds, etc.).
• Perform routine welding and pipefitting repairs within capabilities, training, or qualifications.
• Maintain, calibrate, and repair utility equipment.
• Perform precision rotating equipment alignments.
• Test and troubleshoot individual components to determine necessary repairs.
• Determine types of equipment, tools, and materials needed for jobs.
• Inventory, inspect, and maintain supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Identify and correct the root cause of malfunctions.
• Estimate time and material requirements for jobs.
• Record repairs and maintenance performed, along with materials used.
• Provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and teammates via telephone, written form, email, or in person.
• Report malfunctions and unusual trends or conditions to the Lead Technician, Maintenance Manager, and operations personnel.
• Notify supervisor immediately of exceptions (safety, downtime, etc.).
• Perform all work in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations, and comply with all departmental safety policies.
• Use appropriate safety devices and equipment.
• Serve as plant safety representative when requested (evaluating safety equipment/procedures, maintaining MSDS, scheduling safety training, etc.).
• Act as Lead Technician in their absence.
• Conduct individual projects (development of procedures, equipment bill of materials, etc.).
• Complete required training.
• Perform clerical and administrative duties as necessary.
• Report to work during unscheduled time in emergency situations and maintain flexibility in shift schedules.
• Assist team members with understanding rules, policies, procedures, or regulations.
• Self-evaluate performance and assist with employment interviews.
• Analyze information and evaluate results to assist the team with problem-solving and decision-making.
• Suggest changes to existing procedures.
• Attend planning meetings, Toolbox Discussions, etc.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of thermodynamic, rotating equipment, piping, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic theory and application.
• Ability to read and understand equipment instruction/maintenance manuals, drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
• Understanding of mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.
• Understanding of equipment alignment, balancing, and vibration.
• Understanding of non-destructive testing.
• Ability to perform clerical functions (typing correspondence, maintaining logs/reports, filing).
• Ability to focus and pay attention to others, ask appropriate questions, and understand points being made.
• Ability to give and follow effective oral and written instructions.
• Ability to supervise the work of others occasionally as required.
• Monitor and assess performance of self and others to make improvements or take corrective action.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Lotus Notes/SharePoint, email, Microsoft Office, and CMMS/ERP systems (Maximo, SAP, IFS, etc.).

Qualifications

Vocational-level education with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
