About the role
We are establishing a Civil Service eligibility list of qualified Mechanic Assistant candidates. The list will be valid for up to one year and may fill one or more vacancies. Current City of Ames Civil Service employees who previously held this classification may also apply.
Under general supervision of the Transit Maintenance Coordinator, Mechanic Assistants perform repair and preventive maintenance on gasoline, diesel, or electric-powered automotive and heavy equipment, and assist with more complex maintenance tasks.
Pay
Starting hourly rate: $27.23 as of July 1, 2026. Step increases per IUOE bargaining agreement:
- Step B: $30.98/hour after 4 passed ASE tests or 18 months of service
- Step C: $36.42/hour after 7 passed ASE tests or 48 months of service
$400 annual tool allowance. Assistance provided for obtaining CDL permit and license.

Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and diagnostics on heavy and automotive equipment, including electric vehicle drive trains
- Remove and replace defective automotive equipment; assist senior mechanics in disassembling and assembling major components
- Maintain shop and building facilities
