Meat Manager
About the role
As the Meat Manager, you will oversee all aspects of the Meat Department, including staff management, sales, margin, and labor. You will assist customers, maintain a friendly and energetic demeanor, and adhere to all procedural guidelines set by the Meat Department. This role is ideal for someone passionate about the retail grocery market, organic products, and leadership in a fast-paced, growing environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare weekly sales and labor projections to maximize sales and profits while ensuring operations stay within the allowed labor percentage.
- Monitor and control all costs and expenses, including proper ordering, inventory control, cutting procedures, shrink, and ad displays.
- Manage Meat Department staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and conducting performance reviews.
- Oversee shift operations, including writing and approving work schedules.
- Ensure weekly flyer ads are in stock and ready for sale, and that upcoming ad products are ordered and available for processing.
- Stock meat cases, ensuring proper presentation, organization, and pricing accuracy.
- Maintain cleanliness of meat aisles, storage areas, and workspaces for safety, including cleaning shelves, floors, and removing hazardous debris.
- Assist customers with purchases, information, and product selection, including selling and cross-selling products.
- Receive, inspect, and log products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality.
- Operate and use equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Monitor the rotation of all meat products, discarding expired or spoiled items.
- Balance the meat general ledger and financial statements.
- Manage inventory preparation and control, including back stock, tag accuracy, and preventing out-of-stock items.
- Accurately weigh, label, package, and wrap meat products, following proper dating procedures.
- Ensure proper temperatures are maintained during the production of meat and seafood items.
- Maintain safety practices and care while using cutting accessories, including compliance with mesh glove usage.
- Sustain a high level of product knowledge and preparation.
- Regularly walk the department to ensure an organized, sanitary, and clean appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience.
- Preferred 3–5 years of grocery retail experience in Meat department processes and procedures.
- Previous experience in the natural foods industry is a plus.
- Completion of a Journeyman cutter program.

- Understanding of COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) compliance for seafood products.

Pay
The pay range for this position is $20.50 – $30.05 per hour. The actual rate offered will meet or exceed the legal wage requirement for the job's location and is determined by factors such as market data, qualifications, and the level of responsibilities associated with the role. Compensation also includes incentive bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.
