Meat Inspector - Part Time - Guthrie Co
About the role
The Meat & Poultry Inspection Bureau is seeking a part-time Meat Inspector for the Mahaska County region in southeast Iowa. This position involves conducting inspections at various facilities to ensure compliance with the Iowa Meat and Poultry Inspection Act.
Responsibilities
- Conducts antemortem and postmortem inspections of livestock and poultry.
- Travels to and conducts walk-through inspections of regulated facilities.
- Examines finished and in-process products to ensure wholesomeness and compliance with product labeling standards.
- Reviews records generated by inspected facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and facility programs.
- Enters inspection results into a designated computer system and prepares non-compliance reports and memoranda as needed.
- Communicates with regulated facilities regarding inspection results, regulatory requirements, and changes to policies.
- Counsels new facilities on compliance with regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Maintain a valid driver's license for statewide travel.
- Successfully complete USDA-FSIS Food Inspector Livestock and Inspection Methods courses within six months of hire.
- Handle knives and other tools effectively.
- Have full use of senses, including sight, hearing, touch, and smell.
- Pass a background check required for access to federal computer systems.
Qualifications
- Background in the meat industry, food industry, regulatory work, or agriculture.
- Relevant experience and/or education in food safety, animal health, agriculture, or related areas.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and build professional relationships.
Skills
- Effective use of senses and required hand tools.
- Proficiency in computer systems used for inspection results entry.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule. Hours range from 0-40 per week, with an average of 19 hours per week, and a maximum of 988 total hours per state fiscal year.
