Key Responsibilities
- Manage intoxication and withdrawal states
- Initiate and monitor Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
- Evaluate and manage addiction-related medical and psychiatric problems
- Conduct medical histories, perform physical examinations, apply screening tools, order and interpret laboratory tests
- Complete standard documentation related to the treatment of addiction
- Work in collaboration with medical and behavioral health staff in Central Intake Department, Withdrawal Management Program, and Residential and Outpatient Programs
- Provide direct patient care within HealthRIGHT 360’s Central Intake Department, Withdrawal Management Program, and/or Residential Programs
- Supervise Advanced Practice Providers in Collaborative Agreements, providing input in the clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review and hiring and termination of such staff
- Supervise the MAT healthcare treatment team in the absence of the Director of Addiction Medicine
- Manage Medical Assistants and Nurse functions
- Assist with state disability insurance applications during the residential program treatment
- Monitor clients in Residential Programming for medication assisted treatment compliance
- Collaborate with behavior health and psychiatry teams
- Provide oversight for Advanced Practice Providers including entering into a Collaborative Agreement with the Advanced Practice Provider, providing supervision, having input in the clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review and hiring and termination of providers and clinical support staff
Skills & Medicine Responsibilities
- Determine severity of drug and alcohol use based on current DSM criteria
- Evaluate and treat drug and alcohol related withdrawal with medications
- Determine appropriate ASAM Level of Care based on ASAM criteria
- Assess clients for clearance to enter withdrawal management and prescribe appropriate medication to support withdrawal process
- Prescribe medication assisted treatment to aid in recovery goals
- Evaluate clients in Withdrawal Management and Residential Programs who return to using substances
- Evaluate clients in Withdrawal Management and Residential Programs who return from the ED or Hospital due to an overdose or any other medical condition
- Maintain complete and detailed records of medical history, assessment, and health care plans
- Use motivational interviewing or recovery coaching
- Consulting with the Director of Addiction Medicine for treatment or referral options
Education and Experience Required
- M.D. or D.O. degree from accredited United States medical school
- Successfully completed internship and residency at accredited United States Internship or Residency Program
- Certification/Licensure: Board Certified in family medicine or internal medicine
- Board certified or registered in addiction medicine, or equivalent experience
- Valid and active California medical license
- Eligible to participate in the CMS Medicaid/Medicare reimbursement programs
- Valid and active DEA license with X waiver to prescribe buprenorphine
Desired
- Clinical experience working with people who have experienced addiction, homelessness, incarceration and trauma
- Training in motivational interviewing or recovery coaching
- Advanced knowledge in primary care-based psychiatry
- Advanced knowledge in social determinants of health and harm reduction concepts
Education and Experience Preferred
- Proficiency in understanding social determinants of health and harm reduction concepts
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications, EMR usage
- Experience working with individuals with moderate to severe addiction, mental illness and interactions with the criminal justice system
