About the role

The Mayo Clinic is hiring for various advanced laboratories including Cell Kinetics, Neuroimmunology, Central Processing, Zebrafish Research, and Analytical Chemistry. Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-analytic specimen processing, including receiving, labeling, and preparing specimens for testing.
  • Ensure correct patient identification on all specimens and related documentation to maintain accuracy and safety.
  • Identify, document, and resolve pre-analytic specimen-related issues in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Enter patient information and test orders accurately into the laboratory computer system.
  • Operate a variety of laboratory instruments, automated systems, and office equipment to support testing workflows.
  • Troubleshoot basic instrumentation issues and escalate complex problems as needed.
  • Prepare complex reagents and solutions following established procedures and quality standards.
  • Manage work unit supply inventory, including monitoring stock levels and coordinating replenishment.
  • Respond to a high volume of phone calls from internal and external stakeholders seeking laboratory testing information.
  • Collaborate closely with technologists and other laboratory staff as an integral member of the patient testing team.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety, quality, and regulatory standards during specimen handling and processing.
  • Provide training and guidance to new or less experienced staff on specimen processing and laboratory procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a human biological science (acceptable degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science, Marine Biology, Neuroscience, or similar fields).
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory science principles in chemistry and biology.
  • Experience or coursework related to medical laboratory testing and specimen processing.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and automated systems.
  • Proficiency with laboratory computer systems or similar data entry software.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in patient identification, labeling, and documentation.
  • Effective communication skills for handling a high volume of phone calls and coordinating with laboratory staff.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, including inventory management and specimen workflow.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist experience or training is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with clinical chemistry and biology laboratory practices.
  • Understanding of specimen processing workflows in a central processing or core laboratory.
  • Experience with instrumentation troubleshooting in a medical laboratory environment.
  • OPT candidates are welcome for this role.

Work Environment

This position is based in a Central Processing Laboratory within a large, nationally recognized hospital environment. The work involves frequent interaction with laboratory instruments, automated systems, and computer-based laboratory information systems. Two primary shifts are available: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Training for both shifts is conducted Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for approximately one month. The environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, with a strong focus on accuracy, safety, and quality in specimen handling and processing. Staff typically follow professional laboratory attire guidelines appropriate for a clinical setting, including adherence to safety and protective equipment requirements. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochester, MN.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr.
