Mathematics Faculty

About the role

The High Mountain Institute is seeking a Mathematics Faculty Member for a one-year teaching opportunity at their campus in Leadville, CO. On-campus housing is included in the compensation package.

Responsibilities

• Teach 3-4 sections of math each semester
• Lead 4-5 student wilderness expeditions and serve in an emergency support capacity for semester expeditions
• Mentor a math apprentice each semester
• Advises 4-6 students each semester
• Participates in overnight residential life responsibilities

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in math or a related field
• Prior high school teaching experience, math preferred
• A demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Enthusiasm for working with teenagers in a residential setting
• Current WFR or higher, or ability to obtain such certifications
• Legal work authorization in the United States
• Ability to pass a criminal background check

• Experience in wilderness instruction
• Experience in a residential life environment

Benefits

Total yearly compensation includes a cash salary range of $32,000-$39,000 (based on years of teaching experience) and the value of on-campus housing or a housing stipend. The actual total compensation varies by employee and living arrangement, with a typical on-campus housing value of $9,000. Health, dental, and vision benefits, paid parental/FAMLI leave, and 4-9% retirement benefits match after 1 year are also provided.

Pay

Annual salary: $32,000-$39,000 (assuming 0-4 years teaching experience); Total yearly compensation $41,000-$48,000, inclusive of on-campus housing value or, when housing is unavailable, a housing stipend.

Schedule

Position dates: October 1st, 2026 - May 31st, 2027

About the High Mountain Institute

Founded in 1995, HMI is a nonprofit independent school focused on outdoor, experiential, and place-based education. HMI serves approximately 150 students per year across its high school, summer, and gap programming. About 30% of students receive financial aid, and a similar percentage identify as people of color. All HMI students participate in extended wilderness expeditions lasting from 10-21 days. HMI is not a rehabilitative or wilderness therapy program.
