About the role

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is seeking an Assistant Professor with expertise in applied mathematics, with a preference for nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Teach mathematics and/or statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Engage in scholarly research or grant activity.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees.
  • Mentor undergraduate research and graduate student master’s thesis projects.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field (degree must be conferred by the start date of the position).
  • University or college teaching experience (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant, or similar role).
  • Evidence of ongoing or potential scholarly research in applied mathematics or a closely related area.
  • Demonstrated potential to teach upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level applied mathematics courses.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Research expertise in applied mathematics, with particular interest in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling.
  • Excellence in teaching.
  • Potential for directing Master’s thesis students or mentoring undergraduate research.
  • Potential for contributing to department governance and service.
  • Commitment to mentoring first generation college students in the mathematical community.
