General Duties

Performs routine clerical work; answers and attends to telephone calls; maintains records; operates office machines; sorts and distributes mail; issues keys and identity cards; acts as messenger; and performs related tasks as required.

Typing letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials; acts as cashier; assists in statistical or research activities; collects and compiles data; codes data for computer entry; performs data entry; runs computer reports; performs clerical library work; sorts and shelves books; performs data entry into library systems; binds books and periodicals; assists in instructional programs; tutors math subjects including Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus; provides in-person individual or small group math tutoring on campus; facilitates basic workshops to build skills/increase comprehension as needed; participates in staff meetings and ongoing professional development activities; responds to e-mail and phone correspondence from SEEK Academic Manager; maintains complete and accurate records in the database; refers students to other program services such as Academic Coaching and/or Counseling as needed.

Campus Specific Information

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering associate and bachelor’s degree programs. The Percy Ellis Sutton Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge Program (SEEK) program at City Tech invites applications for a part-time position of Math Tutor (College Assistant).

The Math Tutor will:

  • Tutor math subjects including Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus.
  • Provide in-person individual or small group math tutoring on campus.
  • Facilitate basic workshops to build skills/increase comprehension as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing professional development activities.
  • Respond to e-mail and phone correspondence from SEEK Academic Manager.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records in the database.
  • Refer students to other program services such as Academic Coaching and/or Counseling as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher in undergraduate mathematics courses.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Prior experience tutoring or teaching college students is not required but highly preferred.
  • Availability to work three (3) days per week in person.
  • Ability to tutor Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus courses.
  • Ability to also tutor Statistics, Physics, and Chemistry courses is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Knowledge of contemporary academic technology resources for use with college students.
  • A basic understanding of education opportunity programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to support the academic success of a diverse student body.

Compensation

$19.12/hour

CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
