About the role

The Special Education Teacher at Everett Meredith Middle School provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, working collaboratively with general education teachers to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Responsibilities

  • Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Displays content/pedagogy knowledge in designing instruction that matches state and district curriculum.
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
  • Assigns activities, provides guidance and instructional oversight to paraprofessional support staff.
  • Affirms student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
  • Keeps accurate records, tests, reports, etc. as required by Delaware Statutes and policies, Federal Regulations, School Board Policy and IEP requirements to monitor student progress.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, collaborative rapport and communication with students, school personnel and parents.
  • Supports colleagues in differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of students with disabilities.
  • Collaborates with parents, administrators, and school staff to ensure the implementation of special education services, supports, and accommodations.
  • Attends and serves as an integral part of the IEP team.
  • Develops standards-based, measurable IEP goals based on data and individual instructional needs.
  • Engages in ongoing monitoring of student progress through structured data collection.
  • Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities by communicating expectations of appropriate behavior.
  • Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
  • Plans and uses classroom time effectively.
  • Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures in order to uphold school regulations.
  • Works closely with regular education teachers, special education staff and outside resources to assist students with disabilities.
  • Integrates technology in instruction.
  • Participates in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction, best practices, differentiated instruction, changes in educational policy, and other information as may be necessary to improve classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Participates in district and school level committees designed to foster continuing improvement and growth.
  • Communicates curriculum and student related information effectively in oral and written form.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Hold or eligible for State of Delaware teacher certification in Special Education.
  • Thorough knowledge of IDEA and IEP implementation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject content, curriculum, methodology of effective teaching.
  • Skilled in the use of multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrate skill in oral and written communications, excellent human relations skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • Erecting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
