About the role
The position is open exclusively to Colorado state residents. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple vacancies at various locations within the Division of Youth Services (DYS).
DYS provides a range of residential and non-residential services for juveniles, including detention, commitment, and parole. The division manages fifteen secure facilities and contracts with private providers for additional services.
Description of Job
This work unit delivers comprehensive educational services to adjudicated youth in a structured, supportive, and secure environment. The unit focuses on enhancing academic performance, developing critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and other 21st-century competencies, and preparing students for vocational and workforce readiness.
Primary Job Duties
Establishes and maintains an appropriate classroom setting through effective classroom management and engagement strategies tailored to student needs, including the implementation of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system and behavior tools.
Affirms new and continuing students using multiple assessment methods and collects evidence of learning. Prepares unit lesson plans and daily plans aligned with state standards and critical skills, designs and implements a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student progress, and uses research-based education strategies, including technology.
Ensures compliance with the DYS instructional framework, daily learning objectives, and relevant learning activities, ensuring alignment with state standards and individualized student needs. Ensures accurate educational records are maintained in IC and/or Trails, meeting deadlines.
Substitutes in other classrooms as required, uses appropriate technology to design, upload information, and take attendance daily, grading work appropriately.
Maintains professional boundaries and presents effectively in the classroom and workplace. Utilizes data effectively and applies MTSS processes, progress monitoring, educational advocacy, and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT).
Supports the safety and security of the school and facility by supervising residents as needed and providing immediate assistance as necessary within the facility. Adheres to the trauma-informed culture and expectations, using motivational interviewing, sanctuary model, and restorative justice language and frameworks.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education or a field of study related to the work assignment.
A current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
Preferred candidates will possess experience working with at-risk or adjudicated youth, proficient use of assessment data to inform instructional practice, experience building programs, and relevant years of state service.
Essential knowledge, skills, and abilities include experience with implementing articulated systems and structures with fidelity, understanding of classroom-based behavioral interventions, ability to build rapport with students while maintaining boundaries, secondary school experience, and demonstrated knowledge in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
