MASTER MECHANIC (MACHINIST QUALIFICATION)

About the Role

Perform skilled work in repair and maintenance of all power plant equipment associated with mechanical maintenance. Interface with other departments to ensure efficient, reliable operation of Seminole generating units.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent plus six months to one year of additional related technical training.
• Five years in mechanical and boiler equipment maintenance, with three years as a mechanic or equivalent specialized training in mechanical discipline.
• Must possess Machinist Certification, determined by completion of the SECI Certified Machinist standards or equivalent (oral/written exam and demonstration).
• Thorough knowledge of all relevant safety procedures, regulations, and equipment.
• Detailed working knowledge of mechanical equipment, tools, and procedures related to maintenance and repair of coal-fired electrical generating facilities.
• Good knowledge of mechanical principles, functions, and operations.
• Ability to assess work difficulty and time required to complete tasks.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all established health and safety policies and procedures; provide feedback on safe and at-risk practices.
• Repair and maintain plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, intake screens, water tunnels, cooling towers, water treatment facilities, conveyor equipment, mobile equipment, plant structures, coal feeders/pulverizers, and burners.
• Perform alignment of station mechanical equipment; operate machine shop equipment for reconditioning parts and fabricating new parts from stock material.
• Set up machines for desired operations; create bearing jigs and special tools.
• Conduct heat treating, metal spraying, recondition valves, bushings, sleeves, gears, etc.; align and balance rotating equipment; prepare simple working sketches.
• Engage in oxy-acetylene welding, carbon air arc cutting, flame cutting, brazing, heat treating, plasma-cutting, and black-smithing.
• Assemble materials, prepare items for applications, and use appropriate tools and equipment.
• Perform plumbing, insulating, carpentry, pipe fitting (non-welded), rigging, and safe lifting.
• Alter, install, or remove station mechanical components using blueprints or sketches; field-check materials as assigned.
• Inspect equipment to determine defects, diagnose faulty operation, apply corrective methods, conduct operational tests, lubricate equipment, verify working clearances, and check completed work.
• Maintain work area and equipment in clean, orderly condition; observe SECI Safety Rules and Practices.
• Direct and train personnel as assigned; operate mechanized equipment such as cranes and forklifts.
• Perform other duties as applicable or assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Follow established protective measures, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Work in extreme temperatures, dust, and noise levels; may require ear or respiratory protection.
• Work at heights of 100 feet or more; climb ladders, stairs, and enter vessels through hatches as small as 18” square.
• Use rigging equipment such as chain falls, come-a-longs, and hardware in hard-to-access places.
• Operate overhead cranes, swing a 20-pound sledgehammer, and use a 2 ½” pneumatic impact wrench during turbine overhauls.
• Operate forklifts and mobile cranes to remove large components of pulverizers during mill overhauls.
• Lift items up to 50 pounds.
• Erect scaffold in boiler pendant tubes; rig suspended scaffold/air motors from the penthouse area and ride to work areas up to 200 feet high.
• Wear negative pressure breathing apparatus and ensure proper fit.
• Read and comprehend warning signs, job orders, and blueprints.

Working Conditions

• Some travel and work outside of normal business hours.
• Occasional travel to business meetings and remote facilities, including power plants, pipelines, and gas storage facilities.
• Potential exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment.
• Work rotating 12-hour shifts; be available for call-out duties and extended hours as required.
• Work irregular hours to support emergency work for reliable generation.
• Work outside under all weather conditions; exposure to dangerous chemicals and high steam pressures.
