Duties & Responsibilities
- Install electrical systems and equipment such as switch gears, circuit breakers, switches, outlets, lighting fixtures, including additional wiring as needed.
- Select the most appropriate course of action, given project restrictions.
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
- Monitor performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, performing maintenance by replacing worn out parts or entire units as needed.
- Maintain electrical records by documenting all work performed on equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems such as short circuits or faulty wiring in light fixtures or power outlets, tracing electrical problems to their source using meters and other diagnostic equipment completing the repair work.
- Understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Knowledge of secondary electrical systems, including planning and designing additions or modifications on secondary circuits.
- Obtain any necessary permits as well as order parts, equipment, tools, and materials for the project.
- Ensure that all electrical components meet safety codes and standards, including National Electric Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines.
- Able to lead, train, and oversee the work of an apprentice, teaching these novice electricians the correct methods, techniques and practices, relevant codes, and pertinent regulations.
- Work on a team and communicate well with others, liaising with clients, vendors, and other electricians.
- Create preventative maintenance measures and explain these to clients.
- Read/interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, and other diagrams. Draw rough sketches when required.
- Use project management software.
- Provide assistance during emergencies.
Requirements
- A valid driver license.
- Detail oriented, reliable and self-motivated.
- Excellent written, verbal, and telephonic communication skills.
- Know OSHA safety guidelines and practices.
- Patient when teaching apprentices.
- Able to work safely from various heights off ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and other safe work platforms and areas.
Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
- Current South Dakota Journeyman Electrician License.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
- Demonstrated experience leading, supervising, or mentoring an electrical team.
