About the Role
Under general direction with limited review, this position applies innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems. Assignments are outlined in terms of overall objectives and reviewed largely at completion. The role involves initiating the planning of engineering projects and developing innovative designs or modifications to meet project goals. The incumbent independently performs difficult and complex engineering work with instructions as to the general expected results, documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
Responsibilities
- Interface with multiple engineering disciplines to monitor and control weights and balance of Unmanned Air Vehicles.
- Perform detailed analysis tasks to ensure hardware meets all weight, mass properties, and inertia estimates.
- Support setup and test for weights and balance of detail parts, composite assemblies such as wings and tails, and LRUs (line replaceable units).
- Support setup and test for weights and balance of completed systems.
- Perform various weight and balance tasks related to demonstrated competencies as directed.
- Perform estimation, calculation, and measurement/verification of mass, center of gravity, and inertias of components, assemblies, and completed vehicle or systems.
- Develop the analysis methods and tools for mass properties estimation from conceptual design configurations through first build validation.
- Estimate, calculate, and verify mass properties in support of drawing releases and trade studies.
- Organize and manage weight reduction efforts and strategies using new technologies (materials, processes, etc.) to support improved range of vehicle.
- Apply basic technical knowledge to analyze, investigate, and resolve assigned routine engineering problems.
- Generate and maintain mass properties reports for subject matter experts of various multi-functional teams.
- Develop appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions and communicate results to engineering staff. May be required to make technical presentations to engineering staff.
