About the role
The Division of Workforce Partnerships at Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is seeking teacher assistants to support the delivery of non-credit courses in the proprietary maritime trades curriculum. These positions are part-time and may include both in-person and online training sessions.
Responsibilities
- Aid in classroom and hands-on instruction within the maritime trades curriculum.
- Organize work plans, equipment, and lab assignments for the instructor.
- Mentor and teach students individually.
- Utilize technology for effective communication with students and colleagues, and assist with program record-keeping and reporting.
- Increase student motivation and retention by discouraging withdrawals and maintaining satisfactory retention rates.
- Affirm the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and follow CCRI's policies for accommodating student requests.
- Keep organized records of students' attendance, assessments, and progress, culminating in a final evaluation.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Inventory tools and tool bags at the beginning and end of each lab shift to ensure proper maintenance.
- Operate the tool crib and serve as the tool crib attendant when needed.
- Attend regular teacher assistant trainings (at least twice a year).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Experience in a trade environment and/or an education shop environment.
- High proficiency in technology, particularly Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, and internet for instructional and program purposes.
- Creativity and flexibility in the classroom.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant current education methodologies and techniques.
- Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
- Outstanding communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Collaborative work with students and colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in adult education settings.
- 5+ years of experience in pipefitting, sheet metal, or electrical trades.
- Relevant teaching and/or TA experience.
- Knowledge of successful strategies for classroom management.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning theory, life skills, and college and career readiness curricula for adult populations.
