Join our team as a Marine Mammal Trainer and contribute to the Indianapolis Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. This role involves narrating dolphin presentations, developing enrichment activities for marine mammals, and assisting with research projects.

About the Role

This full-time, 40-hour-per-week position requires flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. You may work with dolphins, sea lions, walruses, or assist with special projects while ensuring the health and well-being of the animals in your care and maintaining exhibits.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement area chats, feeds, demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes tours.
  • Complete daily and weekly duties, including reports.
  • Assist with research projects and exhibit modifications.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance with visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
  • Ascend/descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain while maintaining body equilibrium.
  • Detect, assess, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, using strong verbal communication skills (e.g., two-way radio, telephone).
  • Follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines due to possible exposure to human bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals (e.g., chlorine bleach, cleaning agents).

Requirements

  • Prior related work experience (internships or volunteering accepted).
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in Life Sciences, Marine Biology, or a related field.
  • SCUBA Certification (or ability to acquire within six months).
  • Thorough knowledge of water chemistry and filtration systems.
  • Exceptional visual acuity and observational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
  • Team-oriented personality suited for working with animals.

Qualifications

  • Physical strength and stamina to perform very heavy work.
  • Ability to transport and move items weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
