About the Role
The Manufacturing Systems Engineer Processing provides strategic support to the manufacturing operation in delivering productivity, technical expertise, formulation management, and quality control adherence through continuous improvement. This role also offers processing and dairy troubleshooting, as well as training support to the Garland manufacturing team.
This job requires bending, lifting, and twisting; long periods of walking and standing; working in varying manufacturing conditions including noise (requiring hearing protection) and temperature fluctuations; and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
Responsibilities
- Continuous Improvement:
- Validate unit operation performance and process change responses to ensure product stream identity and functionality.
- Plan and lead large-scale trials, collaborating with processing and packaging operators.
- Prepare post-trial recaps and studies in partnership with QC and R&D departments.
- Analyze in-process and finished product samples to support process and product improvements, including procurement for trials, validations, and sales/marketing samples.
- Lead and support metric-based improvements in yield and system capability.
- Products and Formulation:
- Document and publish formulation changes for cottage cheese and sour cream products and in-process streams.
- Publish supporting compositional and textural target ranges and specification data.
- Collaborate with R&D, QC, and Technical Services on formulation studies and reviews.
- Calculate and publish expected nutritional declaration shifts tied to formulation changes or raw material adjustments.
- Maintain and enhance product formulation programs.
- Technical Support:
- Serve as a key technical resource for Garland plant operations, supporting Processing, QC, Packaging, Sanitation, and Maintenance departments.
- Design, prepare, and execute benchtop trials to solve manufacturing, quality, and dairy science challenges.
- Analyze data from LIMS and production logs to troubleshoot processes and develop solutions.
- Act as a liaison for product gradings, providing feedback and trends to the Garland team, Technical Services, and R&D.
- Design prediction calculations for feed science phenomena (e.g., pH changes, nutritional shifts, heat and mass balances).
- Publish technical reports to raise awareness and highlight findings for plant personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education and Experience:
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Food Engineering, or a related engineering/science discipline.
- 5+ years of industry experience in Food & Beverage, preferably with a dairy background.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Certification in process capability (e.g., Six Sigma) preferred.
- Strong analytical and applied problem-solving skills.
- Passion and aptitude for continuous improvement, statistics, and process control.
- Proven ability to work with teams and provide organizational influence and direction.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently with a "no task too small" philosophy.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency in data analysis programs to substantiate recommendations.
