About the role

The Carolina Hurricanes are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Manual Therapist to join the organization’s Sports Medicine and Performance team. This position will provide advanced manual therapy, soft-tissue treatment, and recovery services to Carolina Hurricanes players throughout the calendar year.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced manual therapy and soft-tissue treatment to Carolina Hurricanes players based on individual clinical and performance needs.
  • Utilize evidence-informed manual therapy techniques, which may include soft-tissue mobilization, fascial manipulation, myofascial techniques, joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, stretching, instrument-assisted techniques, and other appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  • Collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer, team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning staff, and other members of the Sports Medicine and Performance department.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of individualized treatment, rehabilitation, recovery, injury-prevention, and performance-support strategies.
  • Provide treatment and recovery services before and after practices, games, workouts, and other team activities as needed.
  • Support the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions within the scope of the candidate’s professional licensure and credentials.
  • Communicate relevant clinical observations, treatment responses, and athlete status to appropriate members of the Sports Medicine and Performance team.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of treatments and services in accordance with organizational policies and applicable professional standards.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and organizational leadership.

Requirements

  • Candidates must meet one of the following professional credential pathways and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience treating professional athletes.
  • PATHWAY 1 – PHYSICAL THERAPIST
    • Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program.
    • Current Physical Therapist license and eligibility for licensure in the State of North Carolina.
    • Possess at least one advanced-level soft-tissue management certification, including but not limited to Active Release Techniques (ART), Stecco Fascial Manipulation, Neurofunctional Microconditioning, Instrument-Assisted Fascial Manipulation, or an equivalent advanced certification.
    • Hold a certification in sports acupuncture, Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), or dry needling, as permitted within the scope of the candidate’s professional licensure.
    • Demonstrated advanced training and hands-on experience in manual therapy, soft-tissue management, and the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.
  • PATHWAY 2 – ATHLETIC TRAINER/LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited Athletic Training program.
    • Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification as an Athletic Trainer.
    • Current Athletic Trainer license or eligibility for licensure in the State of North Carolina.
    • Current Massage Therapy license or eligibility for licensure in the State of North Carolina.
    • Demonstrated advanced training and experience in manual therapy, soft-tissue treatment, and musculoskeletal care.

  • Previous experience working within a professional sports organization or integrated Sports Medicine and Performance department.
  • Additional advanced manual therapy certifications, specialized clinical credentials, or relevant continuing education.
  • Experience working in professional hockey or a strong understanding of the physical demands, injury patterns, competition schedule, and recovery requirements of the sport.
  • Experience traveling with a professional, collegiate, national team, or elite sports organization.

Position Requirements

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally with the team as assigned.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with providing manual therapy and treatment services for extended periods.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate and reside year-round within a reasonable commuting distance of Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • Must maintain all required professional licenses, certifications, and continuing education requirements throughout employment.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

This position operates within the demanding and highly collaborative environment of professional sports. The successful candidate must be comfortable working extended and non-traditional hours while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, clinical care, confidentiality, communication, and collaboration.
