Manual Machinist

About the role

Perform a variety of machining operations—specifically the set up and operation of large VTL (up to 120” swing) on rotating equipment components such as pumps, turbines, and compressors. Set up and operate conventional machining equipment, including lathes and milling machines, to produce, modify, and repair mechanical components. Read and interpret blueprints, use precision measuring instruments, and maintain strict tolerances while supporting overall shop productivity and quality objectives.

Responsibilities

• Operate large and small Vertical Turret Lathe (VTL) up to 120” swing and approximately 120” under rail
• Operate other manual machining equipment such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to produce or repair precision parts
• Interpret and work from blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to determine machining requirements
• Set up machines by selecting proper tooling, fixtures, and materials for each job
• Measure and verify dimensions of finished parts using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.) to ensure tolerances are met
• Perform machining operations including turning, boring, threading, facing, drilling, and milling
• Maintain tight tolerances and ensure high-quality workmanship on all components
• Inspect incoming and completed parts for defects, wear, and compliance with specifications
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of machines and equipment to ensure safe operation
• Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments to improve accuracy and efficiency
• Follow all safety procedures, policies, and PPE requirements
• Document work performed, measurements, and any deviations from specifications
• Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and other shop personnel to resolve technical or production issues
• Assist with disassembly, repair, and reassembly of mechanical components when required
• Maintain an organized and clean work area in accordance with shop standards

Requirements

• Minimum of five to ten years of experience as a Manual Machinist
• High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
• Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. (with assistance), walk, climb, reach, kneel, crawl, and balance
• Must be able to use hands for assembling and tool usage
• Must be able to stand, sit, bend, and walk for significant portions of the shift
• Must not have allergies or issues related to handling metals, including aluminum, copper, bronze, and steel
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug, alcohol screening, and background check

Work Environment

Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts. Machining operations generate moderate noise and metal particles. The work area is generally clean and safe.

Schedule

Full-time position with a minimum expectation of 40 hours per week. Additional hours, including evenings or weekends, may be required based on company and project needs.
