Manual Honing & Bushing Installation Operator

The Strongsville facility (90+ employees, 100,000 sq. ft.) is a center of excellence for the final assembly of landing gear, focusing on critical machining operations for major commercial and military aircraft programs, including the Boeing 777, Embraer E-2, F-18, F-35, C-17, and C-130.
About the Role
Sets up and operates portable hone and mandrels machines to hone internal or external surfaces of metal objects such as prototype cylinders, bearings, bushings, or connecting rods to specifications. Analyzes specifications and selects tooling based on knowledge of honing procedures.
Responsibilities
- Utilizes a handheld hone and mandrels to size bushings and completes installation processes to place bushings in assemblies.
- May use special optical inspection equipment.
- Reports production time for each job to supervisor.
- Honing:
- Obtains dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts in run from job orders or instructions.
- Positions workpiece in fixture or on machine table, securing it with clamps and wrenches, and verifies positions with instruments such as surface gages and dial indicators.
- Selects honing speed, depth cut, and honing tool based on knowledge of metal properties, abrasives, and shop mathematics.
- Turns nut on tool or sets automatic mechanism to expand tool to selected diameter.
- Positions and tightens stops with wrench to control length of stroke.
- Measures honed workpiece for conformance to specifications using electromechanical limit gages, surface gages, micrometers, and telescoping gages.
- May replace worn honing stones.
- Bushing Installation:
- Hone/ream features in parts using pneumatic tools for installation of bushings on parts/assemblies.
- Use solvents to clean surfaces prior to sealing or assembly.
- Install bushings into housings using arbor press, C-squeeze, and/or hydraulic puller.
- Apply liquid nitrogen to facilitate installation of bushings, as required, per BAC specifications.
- Cold work holes to prepare for close tolerance fastener installation, as required.
- Perform surface seal on bushings/bearings and other part installations.
- Size and micro finish all related blueprint dimensions.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent and trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship.
- 2-4 years of experience in a related work environment.
- Ability to read blueprints and manufacturing sketches.
- Proficiency in reading inspection tools and knowledge of Quality Control, including gages, micrometers, dial bores, and ring gages.
- Understanding of procedures and production schedules.
- Good physical condition; able to lift heavy loads.
- Knowledge of arithmetic involving decimals, fractions, and their application to reading drawings and measuring instruments or calculating and recording dimensions.
- Must meet security screening requirements as set out by ITAR directives.
