Managing Editor, NBA (Remote)

About the role
This is a senior role providing comprehensive editorial oversight of NBA news coverage, driving unique reporting and distinct storytelling on prominent NBA topics. The ideal candidate will have a strong affinity for the NBA’s constant news cycle and a competitive drive. There is a strong preference for candidates based on the West Coast, and this position requires work on nights and weekends.
Responsibilities
- Manage a staff of reporters and/or editors with an emphasis on delivering news and distinct reporting
- Drive creative ideas around daily NBA storylines to advance current news, explore new angles, and provoke thoughtful discussions
- Collaborate closely with video and audio producers to create a cohesive cross-platform experience and maximize storytelling reach
- Work with breaking news and live blog teams to ensure accuracy, presentation, tone, and speed in publication
- Connect national and beat reporting to elevate NBA coverage
- Assist with big-picture vision for the vertical, including generating and planning story ideas and expanding coverage opportunities
- Bring a distinctive, compelling, and authentic voice to all digital media products
- Maintain proficiency in engagement and subscription metrics
- Understand what makes a story successful across various audiences and platforms
- Coordinate staffing assignments, editorial resources, and processes
- Edit and publish stories via WordPress
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in digital sports journalism, with management-level experience
- High-end knowledge of the NBA and a drive to compete in a highly competitive landscape
- Demonstrated experience recognizing, assigning, and editing breaking news
- Advanced ability to generate story ideas that drive engagement growth
- Strong collaboration with writers to strengthen and deepen story ideas
- Advanced editing skills: reporting standards, copy editing, story structure, style guidelines, and ensuring fairness
- Ability to add context to stories, edit in the writer’s voice, and mentor writers and less experienced editors
Pay
The annual base salary range for this role is $120,000 – $130,000 USD. Total compensation may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. For U.S. roles, eligibility for variable pay (e.g., annual bonus and restricted stock) may apply.
