Managing Editor IIJob SummaryKGL is seeking an experienced Managing Editor II to oversee editorial and/or production operations for assigned peer reviewed scholarly journals from manuscript submission through publication. Serving as the primary point of contact for journal stakeholders, the Managing Editor II ensures that editorial workflows meet established standards for quality, productivity, and timeliness. This role partners closely with editors in chief, authors, reviewers, publishers, and internal teams while providing knowledgeable guidance on journal operations, peer review processes, and publishing best practices. The Managing Editor II also plays an active role in supporting journal strategy, optimizing workflows, monitoring journal performance, and identifying opportunities to improve the author, reviewer, and editor experience. This position may supervise and develop one or more editorial associates. Key ResponsibilitiesJournal & Editorial OperationsManage day to day editorial and/or production operations for assigned peer reviewed journals from manuscript submission through publication.Ensure contractual requirements, service level agreements, quality standards, and established timelines are consistently met.Serve as the primary point of contact for editors, authors, reviewers, publishers, and other journal stakeholders.Create, update, and maintain accurate protocols and documentation for editorial and production workflows.Use manuscript management systems to manage workflows, monitor timeliness, generate reports, and evaluate indicators of journal performance.Identify opportunities to optimize editorial workflows and improve efficiency, quality, and stakeholder experience.Proofread and refine journal correspondence and documentation, including decision letters and instructions for authors and reviewers.Manage specialized workflows that may include publication ethics, continuing medical education, press releases, and social media activities.Coordinate invited manuscripts, supplements, collections, commentaries, and other special content.Collaborate with editors on issue planning, lineups, and special issues. Client & Strategic SupportBuild strong working relationships with journal editors and other client stakeholders.Prepare agendas, reports, presentations, and supporting materials for journal and client meetings.Provide informed guidance and recommendations to journal stakeholders based on publishing best practices and journal performance.Partner with editors in chief and other stakeholders to support the journal's strategic priorities and goals.Monitor journal performance and proactively identify issues, trends, and opportunities for improvement. Team Support & LeadershipTrain, guide, and oversee support staff responsible for daily peer review, editorial, and/or production activities.Provide clear direction and feedback to ensure consistent quality, productivity, and adherence to established workflows.Collaborate effectively with colleagues across KGL to support client needs and operational priorities. Basic QualificationsBachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.Minimum of 5 years of experience working in the editorial office of a scholarly journal.Strong knowledge of scholarly publishing, peer review processes, journal operations, and industry best practices.Experience using one or more manuscript management systems, such as Editorial Manager, ScholarOne Manuscripts, eJournalPress, or similar platforms.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.Experience working directly with journal editors, authors, reviewers, publishers, or similar stakeholders.Proficiency with standard workplace technology, including Microsoft Office, virtual meeting platforms, and Google Workspace.Ability to work independently in a remote environment and remain available during standard business hours. Preferred QualificationsGraduate degree.Experience supervising, training, or mentoring editorial support staff.Experience with publication ethics or specialized journal workflows.Experience supporting special issues, supplements, collections, or invited content.Professional social media experience. Work Environment & TravelThis is a 100% remote position involving extensive computer based work and regular use of a keyboard and mouse.
