Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals to advance our mission as a not-for-profit supporting patient care, research, teaching, and community service. We strive to provide exceptional care and believe high-performing teams drive groundbreaking medical discoveries.

About the role

Mass General Brigham’s Investment Office manages over $30 billion, primarily through partnerships with third-party investment management firms. The portfolio includes private equity, venture capital, long-only equities, long/short equities, and real assets. Our goal is to generate excellent long-term risk-adjusted returns to support MGB’s mission of improving global health outcomes.

This hybrid position, based in Boston/Somerville, MA, involves two primary objectives:

  • Collaborate with MGB’s Chief Investment Officer and leadership to design and execute a new direct real estate initiative focused on long-term, non-operating real estate investments. This includes steering investment identification, underwriting, and asset management for directly held properties, requiring thought leadership, a strong network in the Greater Boston Area, and strategic collaboration.
  • Support third-party investment manager underwriting, primarily for real estate strategies but with exposure to other areas, in cooperation with generalist investment staff. MGB’s long-duration capital and mission-driven approach make us an attractive partner for managers sharing our values.

The role offers opportunities for domestic and international travel and operates in a collaborative, meritocratic environment where all investment staff participate in internal investment committee discussions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the CIO and MGB leadership to design and execute a strategic real estate investment strategy.
  • Coordinate with MGB divisions to understand long-term real estate priorities.
  • Proactively identify compelling investment opportunities within target areas.
  • Lead all aspects of direct real estate investment underwriting and transaction execution.
  • Design and oversee asset management strategy for directly held properties, including return-enhancing repositioning.
  • Manage legal and counterparty negotiations.
  • Represent MGB positively to third parties, cultivating relationships with external networks, counterparties, and vendors.
  • Communicate MGB’s real estate investment strategy effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and co-lead underwriting of real estate manager investment opportunities alongside colleagues.
  • Actively contribute to internal investment committee discussions, driving better investment decisions.
  • Mentor less experienced team members and collaborate with other functional groups within the Investment Office.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of investment experience, primarily focused on real estate investments and asset management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Greater Boston Area real estate market, investment landscape, counterparties, and vendors.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the capacity to evaluate complex transactions and identify creative solutions.
  • Energetic, positive, and highly collaborative team-oriented attitude.
  • Intrinsically motivated with proven success leading initiatives from ideation through execution.
  • Inspired to support a mission-driven organization, dedicated to representing MGB’s best interests with unquestionable ethics.
  • Clear leadership skills; prior personnel management experience strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; comfort interacting with senior-level executives and board members.
  • Excellent relationship management abilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with strong academic credentials.

Candidates must be able to work a hybrid schedule from MGB’s Somerville, MA office and travel domestically and internationally as needed.

Pay

Pay range: $300,000.00 - $437,500.00 annually. The final offer will reflect skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other factors. In addition to base pay, MGB offers comprehensive benefits, career advancement opportunities, differentials, premiums, bonuses, and recognition programs.
