Responsibilities

  • Aids in direct patient care as needed to meet staffing requirements - supervises and coordinates patient care (maintains unit competencies).
  • Aids the Nurse Manager/Director in developing new staff orientation plans and ensuring their completion.
  • Aids the Nurse Manager/Director in creating the unit budget and meeting productivity targets.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with patients, families, and nursing colleagues.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Director to improve flow and capacity processes through interdepartmental relationships.
  • Effectively leads and teaches the skills necessary for safe patient care.
  • Serves as a resource for safety and quality initiatives.
  • Oversees unit scheduling with the Nurse Manager/Director to ensure adequate staffing plans are developed.
  • Coordinates and conducts staff education.
  • Works with the Nurse Manager/Director to develop action plans for regulatory compliance, experience, and quality outcomes, and monitors compliance.
  • Rounds on patients to evaluate care, environment, and staff performance.
  • Fosters teamwork through coaching, feedback, and encouraging staff input in decision-making, conflict resolution, and collegiality.
  • Participates in the interview process for new staff.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager/Director in personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and other related activities.
  • Provides immediate support on policies, procedures, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Provides service recovery as needed.
  • Models and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Director on maintaining and monitoring supplies for appropriate inventory and overseeing their utilization and charging.
  • Encourages and facilitates participation of unit-based staff on department and organizational-wide councils/committees.
  • Facilitates assignments that support learning for orientees or nurse learners.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager/Director with timekeeping.
  • Attends departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, participates, or directs departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent degree, or a Bachelor's degree in another field and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), with completion within 24 months of hire.
  • Two (2) years of nursing experience.
  • Previous charge nurse or other leadership experience.
  • Minimum licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Virginia (may hold a compact license).
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
