Manager, Sterile Processing

About the Role

The Manager, Sterile Processing, will oversee the 24/7 operations of the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring adequate availability of patient care and treatment materials. This role involves developing and enforcing policies and procedures for the handling, sterilization, cleaning, maintenance, storage, and assembly of patient care supplies, equipment, and instruments.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of internal policies and procedures for processing, storage, and handling of medical, surgical, and surgical supplies and equipment.
• Develop and implement new and/or updated decontamination and sterilization methods as needed.
• Establish department goals and objectives, and maintain an organizational structure to support required functions efficiently.
• Evaluate service delivery systems and procedures, recommending changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
• Monitor inventory usage, establish par levels, and initiate purchases as needed.
• Evaluate, recommend, and assist in the introduction of new instruments and materials.
• Collaborate with CPD/OR staff and other hospital departments to develop and maintain systems for tracking and distribution of processed instruments.
• Maintain knowledge of current trends and practices in procurement, processing, and maintenance of medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies through professional organizations and continuing education.
• Lead hospital and departmental committees and project teams as appropriate.
• Administer recruitment, evaluations, growth, and development of employees, including scheduling, assignments, and training programs.
• Follow through on disciplinary and other personnel actions as warranted.
• Oversee in-services and continuing education programs for staff development in collaboration with supervisors and single shift managers.
• Implement procedural changes to ensure compliance with hospital, department, and external policies, standards, and regulations.
• Oversee and ensure completion of required quality monitoring and related data collection; maintain records and prepare reports as necessary.
• Manage sterile processing across all shifts (24 hours), including oversight of all sterile processing FTEs with direct oversight of single shift supervisors.
• Manage the administration and maintenance of department recordkeeping systems, including sensitive and critical administrative and financial data.
• Act as a role model to ensure standards for customer satisfaction are met, using collected data to demonstrate quality improvement goals.

Requirements

• Completion of two years of occupationally specific education or an associate’s degree in Surgical Technology, Central Processing, or a closely related field.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Seven years of experience as a sterile processing technician and three years of supervisory experience.
• Current certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).

Skills

• Ability to effectively manage employees within the assigned unit/department.
• Strong communication skills to mediate conflicting views or issues, and well-developed writing skills.
• Ability to interact and coordinate with employees, vendors, surgeons, and nursing staff.

Pay

The posted pay range reflects Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this role at the time of posting. The base pay offer depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and other job-related factors.
