Manager, Software Engineering - Sandy, UT (Hybrid)
About the role
This role combines ownership of the US engineering node as a full-function team, accountability for feature delivery, coaching and career development for engineers across all levels of seniority, strengthening the team's operating model and culture, and growing the team through hiring.
Responsibilities
- Own delivery outcomes for the US engineering node as a full-function team—primarily feature delivery, with squads rotating through support duty alongside the wider engineering organization rather than operating as a single-purpose support unit.
- Lead, manage, and develop the US-based engineers reporting to you, across all levels of seniority, through regular 1:1s, clear goal-setting, and active career development.
- Strengthen how US engineering operates day to day—delivery practices, ways of working, and a self-sufficient team culture aligned with Opengear’s broader engineering direction.
- Develop engineers across the team, building clear growth paths that take them toward senior and lead capability.
- Plan and balance your squads' rotation through support duty alongside their feature delivery commitments, so that neither is deprioritized.
- Build domain depth and cross-skilling across the US team over time, identifying knowledge gaps and developing structured plans to close them.
- Grow the US team through hiring as headcount expands, and develop an additional US manager as the team reaches sufficient scale.
- Partner closely with the Software Director, peer Engineering Managers, the Solutions PO, and product stakeholders on planning, priority alignment, and cross-site dependencies.
- Provide technical and architectural guidance—assessing work complexity, challenging sizing, and coaching engineers through design decisions and implementation trade-offs across the products and domains they own.
- Champion strong engineering practices—software quality, automated testing, CI/CD, and secure development—and support the team through technology transitions while maintaining delivery commitments.
- Identify delivery risks and technical obstacles early, resolving cross-team dependencies and clearing the path to execution.
