About the role

Reporting to a Senior Manager of Software Engineering, the Manager of Software Engineering will lead and support their team members in developing their skills and advancing their careers—all while contributing to our mission of empowering small businesses. You'll also play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our platform, ensuring it remains reliable and high-performing as we scale Jobber.

Responsibilities

  • Live and breathe performance facilitation. Work with your team(s) to help them master their individual crafts, while also collaborating to build extraordinary experiences and systems.
  • Be committed to the success of your people. Help them set goals, have regular 1-on-1s, and provide constructive feedback and coaching to ensure your team's success. Understand employees’ career direction and empower their journey by acting as a mentor and coach.
  • Develop a world-class team alongside a world-class organization. Participate in recruiting events and the hiring process while leveling up your internal team and implementing new processes to build a world-class engineering department.
  • Own how your team builds with AI. Set the expectation that engineers work with agents daily, coach engineers at every point on the adoption curve, and hold AI-assisted work to the same quality bar as everything else.
  • Remove roadblocks and build guardrails. Work with other leaders to create and maintain an environment where people can rapidly produce top-quality work that ultimately helps our customers be successful.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders across the business, including our Management teams within Product and our Business Technology teams, to find the best solutions in Jobber for small businesses.

Requirements

  • A track record of success as an established software engineer, as well as time spent in a leadership position, guiding a team in the delivery of quality software.
  • Strong full-stack technical background, including design and architectural experience.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in either Ruby On Rails environments or ReactJS is essential.
  • A drive to succeed and deliver impactful projects on time. For a high-performing team with a solid roadmap, this might mean getting out of their way, but for a team whose delivery is in doubt, it means working closely with them to find a path back to success.
  • The ability to be agile in an agile environment. Lead and teach your team to adapt to change while thinking critically and creatively to solve problems.
  • Daily hands-on experience building with agentic AI tools, beyond autocomplete or chat. Experience leading a team's AI adoption: driving how engineers actually work with agents, with evidence it changed outcomes, not just tooling.
  • Effective written and oral communication. Be transparent with your team and establish an open dialogue to support coaching conversations and discussions.
  • Leadership and mentorship skills. Bring your shared experience into conversations to influence and provide constructive feedback to direct reports, ensuring goals are met and exceeded.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience with our development stack: ReactJS, Typescript, Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, and GraphQL.
  • Familiarity with maintaining reliability within systems outside your own team.
  • Experience working with high-risk data, high-criticality features, and the ability to balance quick deliveries with strong reliability.

Location

This role can be based near one of our hub cities: Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo. We are also open to fully remote candidates based anywhere in Canada.

Pay

This role has a minimum annual salary of $169,200 CAD, a midpoint of $199,100 CAD, and a maximum salary of $228,900 CAD. The range is designed to reflect progression from learning the ropes to excelling in the role. Offers below the midpoint reflect strong potential with room to develop, while the higher end is reserved for those with deep expertise and lasting contributions.

For US-based applicants, USD salary ranges will be shared based on location during the hiring process.

Benefits

  • A total compensation package that includes an extended health benefits package with fully paid premiums for both body and mind.
  • Matching contributions to RRSP, TFSA, or FHSA.
  • Stock options.
  • A dedicated Talent Development team and access to coaching, learning, and leadership programs to help you grow your career and reach your goals.
  • Annual stipends for health and wellness.
