About the role
The Manager, Projects II (Design) will provide architectural and project management services for the University’s construction, renovation, and deferred maintenance projects, including supervision of contracted design agents, contractors, and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing architectural services, including computer-aided design, and supervise contracted design agents, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Consult with university personnel on proposed architectural projects and develop preliminary scope, programming, budget spreadsheets, and schedules.
- Assist with URI and state agency approvals for project initiation, including funding approvals.
- Prepare Request for Proposal documents for outsourced architect/engineering services and manage the selection process.
- Negotiate and prepare Owner-Architect agreements, project scope descriptions, budgets, and schedules.
- Coordinate approvals with University Counsel and URI Purchasing offices; review plans and specifications for compliance.
- Provide final building design floor plans to the Assistant Director, Spatial Services.
- Manage the design process for assigned projects, including meetings, budgets, schedules, and documentation of decisions.
- Coordinate planning and design decisions with college deans, department heads, and building committees.
- Provide design management leadership to foster fine architecture, efficient building systems, and a livable campus.
- Coordinate with maintenance/trades personnel to ensure designs align with maintenance and repair requirements.
- Assist with the development and application of URI Building Design Guidelines.
- Meet with users and partners to coordinate design review comments and manage fixed equipment specifications.
- Prepare and present regular project reports and updates to directors and committees.
- Liaise between campus customers and design agents; coordinate with regulatory agencies as needed.
- Monitor construction, renovation, and deferred maintenance projects; evaluate design-related change orders.
- Prepare project contract documents for bidding; verify compliance with university procedures and regulations.
- Prepare project public relations materials and make presentations to the campus community.
- Serve on department, division, and university committees.
- Liaise with outside agencies (federal, state, and local) regarding project progress, completion, and close-out.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or architecture.
- Evidence of registration as a Professional Engineer, Architect, or Project Management Professional.
- Minimum of five years of cumulative experience in design or construction management and administration, including construction estimating experience.
- Working knowledge of building code requirements and standard construction specifications.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills; proficiency in written communication.
- Supervisory experience.
- Willingness to travel throughout the University community.
- Experience using computer-aided design and computer project scheduling systems.
- Ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, objectives, rules, and regulations and communicate interpretations.
- Ability to prepare and present detailed studies and reports with recommendations.
- Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
- Must provide own means of transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or architecture.
