Manager, Process Engineering
PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating oil refineries and related facilities through its subsidiaries. We are seeking a talented Manager, Process Engineering to join our team at the Martinez Refinery in California.
About the role
The Process Engineering Manager leads a team of highly skilled Process Engineers to provide day-to-day process unit troubleshooting support for the high-complexity Martinez Refinery, as well as technical assurance for mid-term and long-term strategic and sustainable growth. This role is key to mentoring and developing staff through technical and professional advancement, helping the department adapt to organizational and industry changes. The successful candidate will support the Martinez Refinery in achieving exceptional Safety, Environmental, Reliability, and Financial results.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a department of up to twenty Process Engineers, ranging from experienced engineers to recent college graduates. The team is divided into two groups supervised by Lead Process Engineers who report to the Process Engineering Manager.
- Foster employee development, including training, career development, and succession planning.
- Participate in the PBF Energy circuit Process Engineering Manager network and allocate resources for Best Practice Networks for refining technologies (Distillation, Coking, Reforming, Hydrotreating, Fluid Catalytic Cracking, etc.).
- Actively engage in refinery strategic optimization, cost efficiency identification, and ‘Oil Plan’ development, ensuring technical assurance for margin improvement, unit mass and yield balance, and constraint resolution.
- Set high standards for safety and operational excellence in compliance with site policies and procedures.
- Provide guidance and accountability for proactive, comprehensive process unit monitoring to drive operational excellence and optimum performance.
- Establish priorities and ensure effective execution of scope development for turnarounds, projects, and process changes across the refinery.
- Ensure technical and quality assurance for Management of Changes (MOCs) and Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs).
- Support day-to-day refinery process unit troubleshooting, mid-term, and long-term strategic planning through technical oversight and resource allocation.
- Drive productive relationships with business partners, suppliers, and other refineries in the PBF Energy circuit.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or an equivalent degree that includes Chemistry/Biochemistry/molecular science coursework.
- 7+ years of Process Engineering/Operations Support in a petroleum refinery setting (10+ years preferred).
- 2+ years of Supervisory Experience (5+ years preferred).
- Available during off-hours and days to respond to refinery issues or emergencies, including on-call emergency response functions.
- Occasionally requires an altered work schedule over extended periods (e.g., maintenance outages and turnarounds).
- Ability to:
- Climb ladders and walk up/down steps.
- Lift 50 pounds.
- Work at heights and in compact/confined spaces.
- Work outside in inclement weather.
- Wear a respirator or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Must have an active TWIC card or be able to obtain one (details).

Pay
The salary range for this position is $121,160.47 - $216,090.75. Compensation will be determined based on scope, responsibilities, work experience, education/training, job-related skills, and internal peer equity.
