About the role

The Manager, Payroll oversees Payroll office operations and staff, ensuring payroll is processed according to federal and state regulations and PeaceHealth policies. This role supervises assigned staff and leads system testing and implementation for mergers and acquisitions.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and directs Payroll operations and staff to ensure timely payment of caregiver wages and benefits in accordance with PeaceHealth policies and governmental regulations.
  • Monitors payroll timeliness and efficiency to meet caregiver needs and department standards.
  • Supervises assigned staff, including hiring, training, mentoring, corrective actions, scheduling, time-off approvals, and performance evaluations.
  • Analyzes department resource requirements and recommends staffing levels with supporting documentation.
  • Assists with the accounting department budget, tracks expenditures, and purchases office supplies within delegated budget authority.
  • Communicates regularly with departments to resolve payroll issues and serves as a resource for payroll-related information.
  • Interprets, communicates, and advises department leaders on proper payroll and personnel pay policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates special projects, such as research and implementation of new payroll or processing systems, as directed by senior management.
  • Leads change efforts and implementations of Lawson/Kronos for payroll in newly acquired entities.
  • Ensures payroll systems are updated in accordance with state, local, and federal tax law changes.
  • Maintains and provides records and support documents for internal and external auditors.
  • Drives process improvement for Payroll to standardize work and increase efficiency through automation.
  • Stays current on federal and state regulatory changes (e.g., tax and labor laws) related to pay practices.
  • Educates department supervisors on time-record preparation and relevant federal and state pay requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of payroll experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience consulting on Payroll or Accounting.
  • Preferred: Experience with Lawson software and Kronos.
  • Preferred: APA Certification.

Working Conditions

  • Consistently operates computer and other office equipment.

  • Requires close visual acuity for preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
