Manager of Business Intelligence
About the role
Fried Frank is seeking a Manager of Business Intelligence to lead the firm's BI and reporting function. This is a player-coach role: the person will manage a team of two BI developers/analysts while also personally building and maintaining Power BI reports and datasets. The firm's reporting environment includes legacy SSRS reports on a SQL Server backend and is actively transitioning to Power BI, with a further transition to Microsoft Fabric where justified. The core mission is to drive modernization while simplifying the reporting landscape—currently over 200 financial reports—without lowering service quality. Familiarity with Elite 3E's data model is a significant asset, and experience in legal or professional services is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Team & Backlog Leadership
- Manage and develop a team of two BI professionals—setting priorities, providing technical guidance, and ensuring quality delivery.
- Own the BI/reporting intake and backlog process: triage requests, prioritize against business value, and set realistic timelines.
- Balance hands-on delivery with management responsibilities—remain a working BI developer, not purely a supervisor.
- Reporting Modernization & Rationalization
- Lead migration of legacy SSRS reports to Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, deciding which reports to migrate or retire.
- Review the firm’s report catalog (200+ financial reports) to consolidate, simplify, or retire reports where appropriate.
- Define lightweight report governance (ownership, lifecycle, naming, deprecation) to maintain organization.
- Simplify and standardize data models to minimize duplication and improve maintainability.
- AI-Enabled & Self-Service Reporting
- Evaluate and pilot AI-assisted tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot for Power BI/Fabric) to expand self-service access for non-technical users.
- Prepare semantic models for natural-language querying while ensuring compliance with governance requirements (e.g., ethical walls, access controls).
- Service Delivery & Availability
- Ensure high availability and performance of reporting environments (SSRS, Power BI, Fabric) during transition.
- Maintain or improve user-facing service levels (accuracy, refresh timeliness, usability).
- Establish validation practices to confirm migrated reports match legacy output before cutover.
- Hands-On Technical Delivery
- Design, build, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, and datasets, including complex financial reporting.
- Write and optimize SQL queries against SQL Server and Fabric-based sources.
- Partner with the Director of Data Strategy’s team to align BI reporting with upstream data structures.
- Financial & Domain Reporting
- Develop working familiarity with Elite 3E’s financial data model.
- Partner with Finance and stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into maintainable BI solutions.
- Stakeholder Communication
- Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders (attorneys, practice leaders, finance) about reporting capabilities and tradeoffs.
- Partner with the Director of Enterprise Architecture on BI/reporting design standards.
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive business intelligence/reporting experience, including 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Hands-on expertise in Power BI (report/dashboard design, DAX, data modeling, Power Query).
- Strong SQL Server/T-SQL skills, including query optimization.
- Familiarity with SSRS for evaluating legacy reports during migration.
- Experience rationalizing reporting environments (consolidating, retiring, or standardizing reports).
- Ability to manage a small team while remaining hands-on as an individual contributor.
- Strong backlog management and stakeholder prioritization skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in legal or professional services, ideally with Elite 3E or similar platforms (strongly preferred).
- Working knowledge of Azure data services (Azure SQL, Microsoft Fabric) or willingness to learn quickly.
- Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) certification; Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) is a plus.
- Experience with AI-assisted BI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) and semantic model preparation for natural-language querying.
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical coverage.
- Retirement plans.
- Health and wellness initiatives supporting personal and professional well-being.
