Manager, Model Risk Management

A systemically important clearinghouse is hiring for a newly created Model Risk Manager position in their Charlotte, NC office. This growth hire will join the model risk team as a hands-on thought leader and mentor to junior hires, contributing to the team's expansion over the next several years. The organization focuses on payment processing and transaction clearing for major US banks, fintech payment processors, US regulatory banking bodies, and more. With over 100 years in the market, this role will influence how the team handles risk data analysis for trading and clearing counterparties and reviews the use and efficacy of third-party models.
The Head of Model Risk seeks a strong mid-senior level candidate with deep knowledge of the modeling lifecycle, ideally acting as a leader on the Model Risk team. The role will focus on quantitative analytics, model development, validation, governance, and data science requests across the model risk organization. The individual will play a major cross-functional role, working with business heads, quant groups, risk management teams, technologists, external stakeholders, and model vendors to organize and modernize the model risk function, especially in light of emerging AI tools, expanded vendor model use cases, and increasing complexity in payment processing.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor junior team members within the model risk team.
- Drive modernization and organization of the model risk function, addressing challenges posed by AI tools, vendor models, and complex payment processing.
- Oversee quantitative analytics, model development, validation, and governance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with business heads, quant groups, risk management teams, technologists, external stakeholders, and model vendors.
- Challenge the model risk lifecycle and present findings directly to senior management.
- Analyze risk data for trading and clearing counterparties and evaluate third-party model efficacy.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in a model risk function.
- Excellent academic pedigree, with a Bachelor’s and advanced degrees (MS, MBA, PhD, etc.) from a top-tier university.
- Expertise in interbank payments, corporate treasury analytics and models, and payment processing analytics.
- Prior experience in Model Development or Validation strongly preferred.
- Basic programming experience in Python, SQL, R, or similar language.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
