Manager, Laboratory, Radiation, and Process Safety

Responsibilities

  • Affords assistance in developing and improving laboratory and process safety programs.
  • Develops and standardizes laboratory safety programs, guidance, templates, and best practices.
  • Affords assistance in process safety program development for special hazards.
  • Affords assistance in developing and improving radiation safety programs.
  • Affords assistance in coordinating appropriate licenses and registrations for radioactive materials, radiation-producing devices, and lasers.
  • Reviews building and renovation projects for laboratory safety requirements and operational needs.
  • Develops and delivers training on laboratory, radiation, chemical, biological, process, and engineering safety topics for member use.
  • Develops guidance on engineering control measures and personal protective equipment.
  • Captures site visits, program assessments, and special projects.
  • Supports continuous improvement of member safety programs.
  • Supports Tier II chemical inventory compliance.
  • Conducts laboratory safety reviews and follow-up visits and tracks corrective actions to closure.
  • Maintains monitoring of applicable laws, regulations, standards, and emerging issues and advises members on implementation.

Technical Review and Incident Support

  • Provides technical consultation on laboratory, process, and engineering safety matters.
  • Supports inspections involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation devices.
  • Reviews experimental protocols and project safety analyses in support of member programs.
  • Conducts process hazard evaluations and recommends controls.
  • Responds to technical requests and operational issues.
  • Responds as needed with other qualified personnel to emergencies, assists emergency responders within area of expertise, and supports after-action activities.
  • Drafts technical procedures, guidance, and program materials.
  • Provides guidance to member safety personnel and less experienced staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Radiological Health, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, Engineering, Nuclear Science, Radiological Science, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Eight years of experience in an environmental health and safety field, including four years of experience in radiological safety or related field.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory operations at research institutions and system-level safety program coordination.
  • Strong understanding of radiation protection principles, laser safety, and laboratory chemical/biological safety practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to teach and speak publicly to diverse audiences.
  • Advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to develop online training content.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate regulations, standards, and emerging issues and to translate them into practical guidance and program documents.
  • Ability to tolerate laboratory environments and moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises and chemical substances.
  • Requires ability to wear personal protective equipment including respirator, protective clothing.
  • Ability to travel frequently (up to 40%) throughout the state of Texas in service to A&M Systems members.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Process Safety Practice Certificate or other recognized Professional Process Safety Certification.
  • Specialty certification recognized by the Commission or an Agreement State and meets the NRC requirements in 10 CFR 35.50, Training for Radiation Safety Officer and Associate Radiation Safety Officer.
