About the role

Managing and leading the activities of the Jersey City Underwriting unit to ensure quality, on-time delivery of work products including quotes, new lines, endorsements, and renewals. Underwrite commercial risks in alignment with Tokio Marine Management’s corporate goals and guidelines while supporting new business production through producer and customer visits.

Responsibilities

  • Review new business, renewal, and endorsement requests; gather, analyze, and evaluate all provided information; obtain additional data as needed to determine acceptability based on underwriting guidelines and sound judgment.
  • Manage, develop, and train all personnel within the underwriting unit.
  • Execute all aspects of the portfolio in the territory, including profitable growth, customer retention, and adherence to underwriting and operational guidelines.
  • Foster a teamwork-based atmosphere and establish workflows to meet goals.
  • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with producers, utilizing sales and negotiation skills to secure and retain accounts on profitable terms.
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as Client Solutions (Marketing), Loss Control, Claims, Premium Audit, and Accounting to meet client service goals and enhance account knowledge.
  • Ensure profitability and compliance of your book of business by following TMA and Department of Insurance Guidelines; train team members and participate in self-audit processes.
  • Lead or participate in the implementation of Strategic Initiatives (Company, Department, Region, or Branch) and measure effectiveness, adjusting strategies as necessary.
  • Prepare or provide input into reports or special projects as designated.
  • Comply with internal controls to conduct job functions and administrative activities.
  • Drive underwriting excellence by establishing and adhering to risk appetite, standards, and guidelines, ensuring rating and pricing adequacy.
  • Manage and evaluate staff performance, collaborating with Senior Management and HR on performance management, employment decisions, and development plans.
  • Develop tools and strategies with HR to attract and retain top industry talent, fostering a high-performing team.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of the casualty business, including product features, forms, regulatory, and risk.
  • 10 years of Casualty Underwriting, Agency, or Brokerage experience.
  • Proven supervisory or line management skills.
  • Highly developed leadership skills to maximize employee potential.
  • Proven initiative and judgment to resolve routine problems independently or utilize appropriate resources.
  • Proficiency in all casualty lines of business, including Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, Umbrella, and Workers Compensation.
  • Strong influencing and communication skills, with experience building relationships both internally and externally.
  • Participation in related insurance coursework (AAI, CPCU, ARM, etc.).

Pay

Salary range: $150,000 to $195,000. The ultimate salary offered will be based on factors such as applicant experience and geographic location. Bonus eligibility is available on top of base salary.
