Overview
This position covers multiple locations within an area. You will learn all duties required of a Produce Department Manager and assist the Produce Department Manager in directing and controlling the operation of the Produce Department. This includes supervising produce department personnel, planning and ordering merchandise, ensuring customer service and product quality, freshness, and selection, and coordinating department operations to control costs, meet labor targets, maintain profit margins, and exceed sales goals. You will also perform department clerk duties as needed.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Produce Department Manager in meeting departmental projected sales and gross margin objectives.
- Create effective promotional and seasonal displays; prepare, proof, stage, and package products; prevent shrink; oversee cost/quality control; order necessary products and ingredients; prepare department sales/production guides; compute gross profit; process and maintain accurate department records; and control expenses.
- Maintain and encourage an atmosphere of fast, friendly, courteous customer service.
- Ensure adequate product quantity, quality, and freshness by ordering, checking, receiving, and controlling inventory; building, maintaining, and organizing product display and storage areas; stocking and rotating products; inspecting displays daily for substandard and outdated product; discarding outdated or spoiled products; ensuring proper temperatures are maintained; following retail labeling laws and company code dating policy; processing re-work or reduced-to-clear items; trimming, cutting, wrapping, traying, displaying, and watering products as needed; ensuring proper pricing and signing; conducting inventories; and preparing food items.
- Learn and assist the Produce Department Manager in supervising, motivating, coaching, training, and hiring department personnel.
- Learn and assist the Produce Department Manager in monitoring employee performance and recommending personnel actions (hiring, firing, layoff, and disciplinary action).
- Learn and assist the Produce Department Manager in scheduling personnel according to coverage needs and service levels.
- Perform customer relation duties, engage in suggestive selling, and use other sales techniques.
- Ensure proper merchandising of products by understanding schematics, merchandising advertised and special items, proper signing procedures, analyzing cutting tests, and meeting customer demand.
- Maintain cleanliness and eye-appeal of work areas, storage areas, equipment, and retail displays according to company policy and legal regulations; clean work areas by mopping, sweeping, and taking out garbage.
- Maintain a safe and secure work environment and ensure compliance with security policies.
- Perform receiving duties: verify orders against invoices, report shortages and claims, break down loads, date products, cut cases, stack, price, and mark merchandise.
- Break down freight by moving product, placing it in inventory, operating a forklift, etc.
- Perform all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
- Complete the Manager in Training classroom and on-the-job training program.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Effective communication with co-workers and customers and the ability to follow written instructions.
- Demonstrated understanding of overall company practices through previous experience in the produce department or equivalent.
- Leadership skills in communication, management of people, customer relations, employee relations, analysis, planning orders, judgment, and reaction to business activity.
- Ability to perform basic math (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication) and compute weights and measures.
- Experience operating computers and Windows software in a work setting.
- Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of a produce department clerk at a fully competent and independent level.
- Supervisory skills (e.g., interviewing, scheduling, hiring, counseling, training, disciplining).
- Excellent verbal, written, electronic, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to perform duties with mental alertness involving potential hazards related to procedures, equipment (e.g., knives, cookers), and work aides.
- Ability to work with hands exposed to moisture, fruits, and vegetables.
- Ability to work around machinery emitting heat and cold conditions.
- Knowledge of all areas of department production, including product variability, perishability, safety and sanitation procedures, and department policies.
- Ability to learn taste, content, and perishability of products; conduct visual inspections; and read reports, manuals, etc.
- Ability to calculate inventory.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, walk and move rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.
- Ability to perform repetitious arm and hand movements frequently.
- Ability to reach, lift, stack, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 lbs. within the range of floor level to overhead frequently.
- Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks containing substantial weight.
- Proper use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines and instructions.
- Proper handling of related food products per State and County laws and WinCo standards.
- Ability to perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
- Current Food Handlers Certification per State and County laws and WinCo standards.

- Computer terminal and office machines.
- Order/scan gun.
- Department-specific equipment, including kitchen utensils, knives, appliances, automatic slicers, grinders, stuffers, tumblers, smokehouses, vacuum sealers, overwrappers, scales, band saws, meat tenderizers, meat slicers, bone dusters, bulkers, bailers, cubers, mixers, dough machines, shrink wrappers, cash registers, trash compactors, garbage disposals, cardboard bailers, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and/or forklifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a role with formal supervision responsibilities, managing performance, and/or completion of supervisory training, coursework, or education.
- Experience in a role with product management responsibilities, including all aspects of inventory, display, and maintenance of products within the department.
