Manager Embedded Software Engineering

Briggs & Stratton · Milwaukee, WI · 4 days ago
HybridFull-time

As a Manager of Embedded Software Engineering, your goal will be to plan, direct, and govern the software architecture and engineering execution for next-generation embedded platforms, edge devices, and battery control systems. You will serve as the primary technical leader and manager for embedded software architecture while leading, growing, and mentoring a high-performing software engineering department. You will bridge the gap between low-level hardware abstraction, real-time control systems, and cloud-connected edge architectures to ensure scalable, safe, and robust product development.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementations of unified, reusable embedded software architectures across product lines, ensuring components remain hardware-decoupled, modular, and scalable
  • Guide firmware and control design using object-oriented and low-level programming languages, Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), and embedded OS platforms; support the definition of low-level drivers, middleware, and standard industrial communication protocols
  • Ensure compliance with safety-critical systems standards, functional safety requirements, and secure code execution, while directing secure boot, memory partitioning, cryptographic execution, and Over-the-Air (OTA) update lifecycles
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical, and Systems Engineering teams to support microcontroller/SoC selection, sensor/actuator integration, power management, and hardware bring-up
  • Direct the design and maintenance of data flows between edge controllers, telemetry systems, and enterprise cloud environments to enable digital twin and fleet analytics capabilities
  • Promote the adoption of modern embedded DevOps workflows, automated continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, static analysis, unit testing, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) / Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) validation environments
  • Maintain Agile/Scrum development methodologies tailored to embedded hardware/software release cycles, overseeing sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and cross-functional dependency tracking
  • Establish and track key engineering performance metrics (e.g., test coverage, incoming bug rates, and sprint performance) to drive continuous improvement and accountability
  • Perform full range of managerial responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, coaching, and developing employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; managing department budgets; and evaluating performance
  • Implement guidelines, standards, and team practices for leveraging emerging AI productivity tools across software development workflows
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The above statements are intended only to describe the general nature of the job and should not be construed as an all-inclusive list of position responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field
  • Seven years of professional engineering experience
  • Five years of experience developing system architectures for software and/or hardware systems
  • Strong proficiency in real-time embedded systems architecture, RTOS, low-level drivers, embedded Linux, and hardware-software co-design using industrial communication protocols
  • Practical working knowledge of functional safety, cybersecurity standards, secure boot execution, and edge-to-cloud telemetry architectures for battery management or power electronics
  • Demonstrated experience guiding teams in automated CI/CD pipelines, static analysis, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) / Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing frameworks
  • Proven leadership capability in software talent acquisition, performance coaching, operational budget management, and cross-functional collaboration across hardware, systems, and enterprise teams
  • Fluent in English and primary language used in area of responsibility and/or location

Preferred Certifications

  • Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE)
  • Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP)
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)
