About the role
The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a strategic and results-driven Manager, Capital Planning and Debt Strategy. This role is a key leader within the Capital Planning and Debt Strategy team, responsible for overseeing capital planning processes, driving strategic investment decisions, and optimizing financial and system capabilities to support enterprise growth.
Responsibilities
- Lead analysis and ongoing management of the organization’s debt portfolio, including monitoring outstanding obligations, amortization schedules, and interest cost trends.
- Support development of long-term debt strategy and capital structure planning, including scenario modeling and evaluation of financing alternatives.
- Provide forward-looking analysis and recommendations on borrowing strategies, refinancing opportunities, and interest rate risk management.
- Oversee debt covenant compliance and related reporting, ensuring adherence to all financing agreements and regulatory requirements.
- Lead preparation and coordination of rating agency materials, including financial performance analysis, capital investment updates, and strategic positioning.
- Play a central role in debt issuance and financing transactions, including financial modeling, structuring analysis, preparation of offering materials, and coordination with external advisors (banks, rating agencies, legal counsel).
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness of all required disclosures, including EMMA, MTI, and other regulatory filings.
- Monitor capital markets trends and interest rate environment, providing insights to inform timing and structure of financing decisions.
- Align debt strategy with capital investment plans, ensuring financing strategies support organizational priorities and long-term financial capacity.
- Partner with capital planning stakeholders to evaluate funding strategies for major projects and assess financial impact on liquidity and leverage.
- Develop integrated financial models that connect capital investments, debt capacity, cash flow, and balance sheet performance.
- Support the capital budgeting process by providing financing perspectives, affordability analysis, and long-range financial implications.
- Drive enhancements to financial models, reporting tools, and planning processes, improving transparency and decision support.
- Collaborate with Finance leadership on broader financial planning, forecasting, and strategic initiatives impacting capital structure and liquidity.
- Enhance utilization of financial systems (including Strata) to improve accuracy, efficiency, and integration of debt and capital planning data.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field (MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred).
- 7–10+ years of progressive experience in debt strategy, treasury, capital markets, financial planning, or healthcare finance.
- Proactive and solutions-oriented, with the ability to identify opportunities and mitigate financial risks.
- Strong business partner who can influence decisions through data-driven insights.
- Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on enhancing financial processes and tools.
