The Manager, Bioinformatics is a largely self-driven role, working in collaboration with others on one or more projects that are extremely complex in scope. This position involves independently making detailed observations, analyzing highly complex and technical data, critically interpreting results, and providing scientific rationale and future project direction. The role also includes developing timelines and plans for new assignments, providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior bioinformatics scientists, and leading a team of Bioinformatics Associates and/or Scientists.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive analyses within several product or technology areas and identify problems and discrepancies.
- Independently develop, plan, and analyze results of experiments within defined timelines; present and communicate findings at data, group, and project team meetings.
- Critically analyze research/experimental data, interpret results, and provide insights into next steps and project direction.
- Contribute to the development of timelines and plans for new assignments, studies, or projects.
- Provide technical guidance to junior scientists in project teams.
- Manage bench-generated data and bioinformatics outputs within high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing environments.
- Determine, utilize, and apply methods or technologies effectively; propose new techniques when appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge of technological industry developments to aid in project completion or process improvements.
- Provide scientific rationale for data analysis and interpretation; participate in project planning and experimental design decisions.
- Prepare and provide data for scientific abstracts, conferences, project meetings, and publications.
- Contribute to the intellectual property portfolio by implementing innovative ideas to solve problems or improve methods.
- Generate, document, and communicate development plans for critical project aspects.
- Develop research plans, experimental outlines, and protocols; perform laboratory experiments.
- Prepare detailed technical procedures, protocols, and reports.
- Evaluate the impact of nonconforming data on products or processes; identify and address trends in study data.
- Prepare and approve written reports.
- Lead identification of areas for process improvements.
- Maintain lab notebooks in compliance with legal, ISO, and QSR requirements.
- Prepare highly technical reports summarizing results, outcomes, next steps, and future project direction for leadership and project teams.
- Present and defend scientific findings at meetings; critically evaluate data and lead discussions as a subject matter expert.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration, and independent thought in problem-solving.
- Work on complex problems requiring evaluation of intangible variables and exercise independent judgment in developing solutions.
- Work individually and collaboratively to meet department and project objectives within timeframes.
- Act as a bioinformatics leader for one or more complex projects and as a subject matter expert in core or cross-functional meetings.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for data interpretation.

Requirements
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics, or a related field; or a Master’s degree plus 4 years of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree plus 6 years of experience in lieu of a PhD.
- 8+ years of industry or academia experience in bioinformatics.
- 6+ years of experience in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science, or pharmaceutical industry.
- 3+ years of direct or indirect leadership or management experience.
- Deep knowledge and thorough understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and genomics.
- Demonstrated expertise in product/assay research, design, or development.
- Basic computer skills, including internet navigation, email, and word processing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Ability to perform essential duties with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science, or pharmaceutical industry.
- Previous experience as a project lead for a team of scientists.
- 2+ years of direct people leadership and management experience.
- Experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing environment, preferably in a GMP and/or ISO setting.
- Previous industry experience in product development or technical support.
- Experience with genomic databases and software.
- Substantial bioinformatics troubleshooting experience.
- Previous experience working in a molecular diagnostics or clinical laboratory setting.
Pay
The base pay for this position is $99,300.00 – $198,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
