About the Role

At Houston Methodist, the Mammography Technologist I performs mammograms, biopsies, and bone density exams. This role ensures high-quality mammography examinations in accordance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and American College of Radiology (ACR) standards. The position may assist with quality control activities and is a key member of the direct patient care team.

Responsibilities

People

Service

  • Performs mammograms for both diagnostic and screening purposes, as well as biopsies and bone density exams.
  • Proactively assesses and responds to patient needs for adjustments or interventions to optimize care, image quality, and patient experience.
  • Modifies technical factors to achieve desired imaging results and recognizes complications or limitations associated with procedures.
  • Assists physicians during diagnostic or special procedures, including sterile technique.
  • Provides accurate explanations and instructions to patients and family members using appropriate terminology and communication skills.

Quality/Safety

  • Follows safety standards and conducts all imaging procedures accordingly, using ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles.
  • Maintains proper sterile techniques and ensures compliance with radiation safety and infection control procedures.
  • Uses critical thinking to review and critique images, ensuring compliance with MQSA regulations.
  • Reports “near misses” and inputs errors into the hospital patient safety reporting system to improve processes.
  • Performs daily imaging equipment quality control (QC) and reports malfunctions to management.
  • Proactively addresses patient reactions (e.g., to contrast media or medications) and obtains assistance as needed.

Finance

  • Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures and enters charges at the time of service.
  • Uses resources efficiently and manages time effectively to prioritize daily tasks.

Growth/Innovation

  • Participates in department projects or shared governance activities.
  • Engages in growth and development through in-services and continuing education.
  • Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required certifications.
  • Required certifications:
    • ARRT-R (Radiologic Technologist - Radiographer) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (must be primary source verified).
    • ARRT-M (Radiologic Technologist - Mammography) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (must be primary source verified, obtainable within 6 months).
    • CMRT (Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist) – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (must be primary source verified).
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association.

Skills

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to ensure patient and employee safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer-focused manner.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Hospital/Radiology Information Systems and Office software.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Adapts to multiple priorities with minimal supervision, organizing workflow and participating in problem-solving.

Supplemental Requirements

  • Scrubs: Yes (department-approved attire).
  • On-call: Required during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather events).
  • Travel: May be required within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
