About the role

The College of Engineering Makerspace Coordinator (EMC) serves as the operational and programmatic lead for the College of Engineering Makerspace. The position is responsible for maintaining a safe, innovative, accessible, and highly utilized engineering prototyping, fabrication, and experiential learning environment that supports the educational, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, outreach, and workforce development missions of the College of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, innovative, accessible, and highly utilized engineering prototyping, fabrication, and experiential learning environment.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the makerspace, including facility coordination, equipment maintenance, user support services, inventory and supply management, safety compliance, equipment lifecycle management, operational workflow development, and makerspace accessibility.
  • Develop and implement operational procedures, safety protocols, training requirements, equipment certification programs, and preventative maintenance schedules to support safe and efficient makerspace operations.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations to college leadership regarding operational improvements, equipment replacement, facility upgrades, and future expansion of the makerspace.
  • Manage operational expenditures associated with the makerspace, including procurement coordination, vendor interactions, equipment repairs, maintenance services, inventory replenishment, and charge center activities.
  • Assist college leadership with budget planning, financial tracking, operational reporting, and long-term infrastructure and resource planning.
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate student employees and makerspace volunteers.
  • Establish operational expectations and customer service standards to promote an inclusive and collaborative maker culture.
  • Support the integration of makerspace technologies into curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Collaborate with university units including other makerspaces and machine shops across campus, Facilities Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Information Technology, and other academic and administrative departments to maintain efficient and compliant operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), with a minimum of 2 years of documented experience in a lab or machine shop setting; or Associate degree in Engineering or Technology with a minimum of 4 years of documented experience in a lab or machine shop setting will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Operational management of makerspaces, fabrication laboratories, machine shops, innovation centers, engineering laboratories, or related technical environments.
  • Experience should include equipment maintenance, operational coordination, safety compliance, inventory management, user support, and supervision or coordination of student employees, staff, or volunteer.

  • Strong technical, operational, organizational, managerial, financial, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a dynamic engineering environment.
