Maintenance Worker II (Streets and Bridges)
About the role
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
Responsibilities
- Performs construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and roadways.
- Performs permanent repairs to utility cuts.
- Performs digging, picking, shoveling, leveling materials, and using hand tools in performing general construction and maintenance repairs on City streets and bridges.
- Operates various hand and power tools.
- Drives City vehicles, including dump trucks and light construction equipment.
- Maintains and repairs asphalt by repairing potholes and cave-ins, performing cuts and resurfacing.
- Repairs concrete, stone or brick areas by removing unsafe curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways and roadways, setting forms and grading areas using various equipment and tools while ensuring proper water run-off.
- Repairs brick or stone by removing damaged brick, cobblestone, sidewalk or roadway, replacing and relaying masonry or cutting stone with masonry saw, stabilizing the base, estimating materials needed, and finishing work.
- Requires normal hearing, peripheral vision, and depth perception to safely work on streets with high traffic volume.

Requirements
- Must possess Driver’s License.
- Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview.
- Must obtain a class B commercial driver’s license within six months of employment with the City.
- May require obtaining Pesticide license.
Qualifications
- Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines.
- Level of knowledge equivalent to high school or equivalency.
- One year as a Maintenance Worker, or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program based on assignment.

Pay
Hiring Salary Range: $43,264-$49,646.44 (Additional $5,000 CDL Stipend upon obtaining Commercial Driver’s License)
Schedule
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 40 hours per week every week
