Full-time position with the Saratoga Springs Public Works Department of approximately 40 hours per week, working under the general direction of the Assistant Public Works Director – Utilities.

About the role

The successful applicant will assist in the ongoing operation and maintenance of culinary water and secondary water throughout the City. This position also functions as one of the City's principal "on-call" employees for after-hours emergencies related to areas of responsibility and snow plowing. The Public Works Department will provide opportunities to grow and progress within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily site inspections of culinary and secondary water facilities to ensure adequate water levels and function
  • Repair and coordination of repairs to water facilities as needed
  • Installation and maintenance of water meters
  • Water meter reading on a monthly basis
  • Communication with the public (developers, contractors, or property owners) as needed on location of public utilities
  • Snow plowing of public streets as needed
  • General maintenance duties of public facilities as assigned
  • Utility locating
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Maintenance Worker I

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • No experience required; preference given to applicants with some experience working with public works systems or general construction
  • Certifications required (must be acquired within 6 months of start of employment):
    • Valid Utah CDL
    • CPR
    • First Aid
    • OSHA Confined Spaces
    • Backflow 101

Maintenance Worker II

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience working with public water facilities; or an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience
  • Special Qualifications & Certifications:
    • Water Operator II and Backflow Technician certifications
    • OSHA Confined Space Certification
    • OSHA Trench Safety Training
    • First Aid and CPR Certification
    • Utah CDL License

Skills

  • Knowledge of water systems and their functions, operations, and routine maintenance needs
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations and applications
  • Knowledge of correct use of the English language and vocabulary
  • Ability to interact with the public in emotional situations while maintaining professional and polite demeanor
  • Ability to operate moderate to heavy equipment needed to perform maintenance duties
  • Ability to review and interpret basic to moderately difficult building and construction plans for public utility systems
  • Ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with developers, contractors, citizens, coworkers, and supervisors
  • Ability to exercise sound and good judgment at all times, especially in emergency situations
  • Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner

Working Conditions

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms
  • Vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 80 pounds
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field
  • Work may periodically require climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling
  • Will be working with sewer effluent and required to receive hepatitis shots
  • May be required to work in outside weather conditions, in wet and/or humid conditions, in high, precarious places, near moving mechanical parts, near fumes, airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals, or near risk of electrical shock and/or vibration

Pay

  • Maintenance Worker I: Minimum - $21.73/hr., Midpoint - $26.07/hr., Maximum - $30.42/hr.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Minimum - $23.07/hr., Midpoint - $27.68/hr., Maximum - $32.30/hr.
