Distinguishing Features of Work

The City of Wichita Public Works & Utilities is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Worker to join our team and support the upkeep of city facilities, streets, grounds, and equipment. This role is essential to ensuring safe, functional, and well-maintained infrastructure that serves residents across our community. As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform a wide range of semiskilled tasks involving repairing and maintaining streets and equipment, as well as maintaining and repairing traffic signs and pavement markings. The position offers the opportunity to work outdoors in all seasons, apply practical problem-solving skills, and operate tools and equipment that directly support city operations.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Performs semiskilled building maintenance tasks, such as making minor repairs to chairs, flooring, windows, and sash cords.
  • Performs building and equipment maintenance duties including rough carpentry and plumbing work, plastering and cement work, painting, and minor electrical repair work.
  • Paints traffic markings on streets, and erects, repairs, and paints traffic signals and signs in a shop or in the field.
  • Makes boxes, forms, and frames, and performs other semiskilled carpentry tasks.
  • May perform some routine custodial duties.
  • Performs semiskilled grounds maintenance tasks, such as operating power mowers, edgers, irrigation equipment, and related devices.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills for record keeping.
  • Working knowledge and ability to understand directions verbally and from written instructions, including work orders, requests, sketches, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and shapes accurately.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficient working relationships with co-workers, city employees, contractors, vendors, and citizens.
  • Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and powered tools related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to occupational nuisances associated with working in high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely work in and around high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely climb stairs, ladders, and bend, twist, and reach as necessary to complete required tasks.
  • Ability to safely maneuver into or on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to lift safely and independently, and carry bulky items weighing up to 90 pounds, or with assistance up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement and sometimes extreme weather conditions including rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, humidity, and low visibility conditions due to low light or bright light.
  • Ability to perform snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations, which may include overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 60 days of hire.
