About the role
The Facilities Custodial Worker reports to and works under the direction of the Public Works Superintendent to maintain the cleanliness, upkeep, and appearance of council chambers, meeting rooms, offices, storerooms, restrooms, hallways, grounds, and other areas of the Municipal Buildings in the City of Red Oak.
Responsibilities
- Represent the City of Red Oak professionally and appropriately at all times.
- Clean the Red Oak Government Center daily and other City buildings occasionally.
- Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including toilets, urinals, stall doors, sinks, and mirrors, using established practices and procedures and refill dispensers.
- Empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; collect and remove trash and recycling; collect and remove exterior trash and recycling bins; keep building exterior free of waste and debris.
- Vacuum all carpeting in offices and lobby; sweep and mop vinyl and tile floors as scheduled.
- Sweep and spot mop gym floor daily, deep clean as scheduled.
- Dust desks, blinds, and all office furniture.
- Clean all glass and mirror surfaces, including entry doors.
- Clean exterior windows as needed.
- Use ladders when required in work assignments.
- Clean tabletops, counters, and chairs.
- Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high-pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Operate floor buffer and steam cleaning machine.
- Perform minor building repairs, change light bulbs, and call in work orders.
- As needed, assist with set-up, break-down, and storage of tables, chairs, risers, and other meeting room equipment.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure buildings when facilities are not utilized; check for unlocked doors and windows; report unauthorized occupants.
- Organize and maintain supplies.
- Keep maintenance records on buildings.
- Protects classified, confidential and sensitive information.
- Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff.
- Performs all job duties, tasks, and activities according to work instructions and policies.
- Identifies, records, and reports any problems or need for significant repairs.
- Maintain outside grounds related to assigned facility as scheduled.
- Maintain adequate inventory of all required cleaning/maintenance supplies and equipment; notify Department Head of inventory needs on a timely basis.
- Routinely inspect cleaning/maintenance equipment to ensure safe operation; notify the supervisor immediately when frayed wires or otherwise defective equipment is identified.
- Provide facility visitors with information, directions, or other assistance, as required.
- Initiates, recommend or provides solutions through appropriate channels.
Qualifications
- A High School diploma or GED required.
- Two (2) years of experience performing janitorial and light building maintenance preferred.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and effectively handle emergencies in a professional manner.
- Clear driving record.
- Ability to abide by all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
