This recruitment is for several vacancies in the San Joaquin County Public Works Roads and Flood Channel Maintenance Divisions. The eligible list may also be used to fill future vacancies, including part-time opportunities.
About the role
Performs routine maintenance work on highways and flood control channels, assisting in repairing roadway and flood control facilities.
Responsibilities
- Applies road and levee construction and maintenance materials; performs minor concrete work; loads trucks with construction materials.
- Assists in installing and maintaining traffic signs, pavement legends and symbols, and reflective pavement markers; learns to fabricate simple traffic signs.
- Sprays weeds along roads, levees, channels, creeks, and sloughs; cleans and clears roadways, basins, culverts, streams, and drainage ditches of brush and debris; hauls debris to disposal sites.
- Digs ditches; lays pipes; repairs fences and gates; may act as laborer on tree crews.
- Assists with the operation of highway paint striping equipment or paint delivery systems for road markings.
- Installs construction signs and barricades; serves as flagger for construction, maintenance, and traffic operations.
- May operate a variety of road and channel construction and maintenance equipment, including light single axle dump trucks, jackhammers, chisels, torches, compressors, air-activated tools, and related equipment.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
- Must obtain a Class B California driver’s license with tanker and airbrake endorsements prior to completion of the probationary period (waived for employees in the class prior to March 12, 2008).

Physical and Mental Requirements
- Mobility: Frequent walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, driving; occasional climbing, sitting, standing, running, crawling; operating heavy equipment.
- Lifting: Frequently 5 to 30 lbs; occasionally 30 to 70 lbs; occasionally restraining, lifting, and/or turning heavy objects.
- Visual: Good overall vision, color perception, depth perception; occasional reading and close-up work; normal hand-eye coordination.
- Dexterity: Frequent holding, reaching, grasping; occasional repetitive motion; frequent writing.
- Hearing/Talking: Frequent hearing of normal speech; occasional radio communication, in-person conversation, exposure to traffic noise; ability to hear faint sounds.
- Emotional/Psychological: Frequent concentration, decision-making, public contact, working alone; occasional exposure to trauma, grief, death, hazardous materials, and emergency situations.
- Special Requirements: May require working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays, and emergency call-back; occasional travel.
- Environmental: Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, odors, and varied weather conditions.

- 125 Flexible Benefits Plan: Voluntary pre-tax program for health-related and dependent care expenses (Health Flexible Spending Account: $2,550 annual limit with $500 carryover; Dependent Care Assistance Plan: $5,000 annual limit).

- Deferred Compensation: Plan under Section 457 of the IRS code. Annual contribution limit: $22,500 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less). Individuals age 50+ may contribute up to $30,000. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
- Vacation:
- 10 days per year up to 3 years of service.
- 15 days after 3 years.
- 20 days after 10 years.
- 23 days after 20 years.
- Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year (effective July 1, 2017).
- Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation. Eligible for 8 hours of administrative leave if leave balance equals at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll for the entire calendar year.
- Bereavement Leave: 3 days of paid leave for the death of a qualifying family member; 2 additional days for the death of a spouse, domestic partner, parent, or child.
- Merit Salary Increase: New employees start at the first step of the salary range. Eligible for a merit increase to the next step after 52 weeks (2,080 hours) at each step.
- Educational Reimbursement Program: Up to $850 per fiscal year for career-related coursework. Up to $800 per semester ($1,600 per fiscal year) for approved four-year college/university programs.
- Parking Supplemental: County contributes up to $20 per pay period for employees who pay for parking and work in the Downtown Core Area.
- School Activities Leave: Up to 40 hours per year (max 8 hours per month) to participate in children’s school activities.
Pay
$4,069.56 - $4,946.58 per month.
Schedule
Full-time. May require working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays, and emergency call-back.
